LEAKED! SEPTEMBER SURPRISE?? [link to www.sfgate.com] Unclassified truth on terrorism - Tuesday, September 26, 2006 ANOTHER LEAK has sprung in the agencies of American intelligence, and as usual, the Bush administration is frantically forming a spigot of spin. This time, it was a series of weekend news reports about a classified National Intelligence Estimate that claims the Iraq war has made terrorism worse. That's what we think, anyway -- we haven't seen the document, which was completed in April, and neither have most members of Congress, who've felt free to comment on it anyway. The startled fumbling and bumbling of the Bush administration, which is usually phenomenal at controlling the story -- press secretary Tony Snow huffed that the news reports didn't say anything that President Bush hasn't already said, though, in fact, they stand in direct contradiction to the Bush story line on Iraq -- leads us to suspect that this estimate's going to stay classified for a long, long time. So, in lieu of real knowledge, voters can expect to hear a lot of political rhetoric about this estimate for the six weeks leading up to the Nov. 7 election. This is a shame for two reasons. The first is that politicians need to scrutinize National Intelligence Estimates very carefully before opening their mouths and beating their drums -- something we wish they'd done in 2002, when they heard about an estimate that concluded Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The second reason why this is a shame is the fact that there's more than enough unclassified information to prove that the Iraq war has been an incubator for new terrorist threats. Last week, the House Intelligence Committee released just such a terrorism report -- one based on unclassified documents, with horrifying details about Iraq that should grab the attention of every American: "If Islamist extremist groups are successful in preventing a legitimate government from flourishing in Iraq, the country could become a permanent base for al Qaeda to recruit, train and conduct operations against non-Islamic governments in the region, and eventually the United States." Try as it might, the White House cannot conceal the plain-sight reality that the mess in Iraq is a growing danger to the world. |

Clearly you don't even know what 'report' you are talking about... The 'report' that had selected portions 'leaked' was a National Intelligence Assesment from April of 2005...There is no "FULL report" as you seem to think...The NIE in question is a 'summary' of the findings of 16 various agencies who must submit assesments of their own... The 'leaked' portion was one paragraph of a 9 page 'summary' of the findings from 16 agencies... Lets wait to see what the entire 9 pages say and where that one paragraph falls in the entire context.. M'kay? |

LEAKED! SEPTEMBER SURPRISE?? Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, A.C. 35140. The National Intelligence Estimate was April 2006. Read what Democratic Whip Reid has to say: [link to releases.usnewswire.com] Reid: the Senate Must Have Answers About the Effects of War in Iraq 9/26/2006 3:04:00 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: National Desk Contact: Jim Manley or Rebecca Kirszner, 202-224-2939, both of the Office of Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid today sent the following letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, urging the Republican leader to join in calling for the authors of the recently-leaked National Intelligence Estimate -- which reportedly concludes the war in Iraq has increased the threat of terrorism -- to provide all senators with a classified briefing on the conclusions of their report. In the fourth year of war in Iraq, it is critical that the Congress ensure America has the tough and smart policies needed to best defend this country and to better fight the war on terror, said Reid's office, policies that must be based on a full and accurate understanding of the true conditions on the ground in Iraq and the global effects of failed policies in that country. The text of the letter is below: September 26, 2006 Senator William H. Frist Majority Leader United States Senate The Capitol Washington, D.C. 205010 Dear Senator Frist: This weekend the media described an important April 2006 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) analyzing trends in global terrorism. The NIE was prepared by the 16 agencies that comprise the U.S. intelligence community and represents our government's most authoritative assessment of this issue. These public accounts indicate the NIE made a number of key judgments about the administration's efforts in the war on terror, including a conclusion that the war in Iraq, rather than stemming the growth of terrorism, has helped fuel its spread across the globe. While such a judgment would be consistent with views I have heard expressed in many counterterrorism and Iraq briefings, the White House has said the media coverage of the NIE "is not representative of the complete document." Director of National Intelligence Negroponte also issued a statement that "viewing (the conclusions of the Intelligence Community) through the narrow prism of a fraction of judgments distorts the broad framework they create." In light of the significance of the issues covered by the NIE and the apparent differences over what it says, I think it is important that we work together to make this information available to members and the American public so they can judge for themselves. Therefore, I ask that you join with me to request that the authors of this assessment provide all senators a classified briefing this week. In addition, as you know, the administration has previously declassified numerous intelligence products when it has been in the public interest to do so and it can be done without harming sources and methods. I believe both conditions apply with respect to all or nearly all of the text of this NIE. I also hope, therefore, that you will add your voice to the growing chorus of senators calling for the entire NIE to be declassified so that this important public debate can be based on the facts. Sincerely, Harry Reid [link to www.usnewswire.com] -0- Even the congresscritters don't have the FULL report, A.C., and neither does this article.
