I work for Mr Edison's company. It's not as vulnerable as you think. However all the infrastructure is getting very old. Probably more risk from failure of the grid because of old age than anything. No new investment to speak of in many years. Wind and Solar mostly. Any serious power generation projects have almost ceased since Obama.

Backup local grid that does not use computer chips. Yes, it is possible.

Search "Metcal sniper". It's very vulnerable. I will agree that the infrastructure is old.

Allot of it is privately owned. It's bad for shareholders to spend money on things like upgrades and maintenance.

Can't hack it from the internet if it isn't hooked up to the internet.

They need to have these systems completely stand alone and heavily shielded from EMP.

And I say that because anyone with half a brain knows that a Carrington-like event is going to happen sooner or later.

Unless it's because they full well know that if another Carrington-like event happens we are all doomed anyway.

Think about it, all the nuke plants will melt down, hundreds of Fukushima-like events.

Sure, many will survive such an event short term and possibly long term. But what will fail at a relatively low threshold is the human races ability to reproduce. And just about everything else on the planet.

I would say it was purposely set up that way so the plug can be pulled when wanted and blamed on someone else.

Solar surprises, yes indeed. Things like the great volcanic winter of the early 1800's, The Carrington Event of 1859 (----> [link to science.nasa.gov] ) ... nature doesn't stop doing its thing just because society has technologically evolved. An event like the one in 1859 would be devastating, given the current state of America's grid, imo.

Never hurts to have a little extra water, food, batteries on hand at any rate.
