I believe it has possibly legitimately happened to some people before but is not as common as people are making it out to be. I believe being mentally ill can also cause feelings of paranoia which some of these mentally ill folks have found an echochamber of sorts on the internet to reinforce their paranoid delusions of being gangstalked. Hope that made sense.
