Russia threatens to deploy Iskander nuclear-capable missiles to Kaliningrad

Russia could deploy Iskander nuclear-capable missiles to Kaliningrad, only 300 kilometers from the coast of the Swedish island of Gotland, if the United States increases its nuclear presence in Germany, Russian news agency Interfax reports.

The announcement comes after reports in German media that the US plans to upgrade its nuclear power in Germany with 20 B61-12 bombs.

"This can change the power balance in Europe. And it would undoubtedly force Russia to take countermeasures to restore the strategic balance," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says.

Iskander missiles can carry nuclear warheads and hit targets up to 500 kilometers away.
