Earthquake in Kansas? - It was actually Oklahoma, but felt here in Wichita - 4.4 Medford, Oklahoma (Downgraded from 4.8)
Did anyone just now feel an earthquake? I swear I was just woke up by an earthquake, but I'm not seeing anything on the USGS map!

The bed was really shaking and the fan was too and something fell off the shelf in our living room.

EDITED TO ADD: The earthquake area does cross over into South Central Kansas and are considered, at least in my opinion, to be part of the larger swarming area that goes from South Central Kansas into North Central Oklahoma.

Here are the statistics for the South Central Kansas area since January 1, 2015, through today:

1,348 earthquakes

When you take the South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma area earthquakes together, here are the statistics since January 1, 2015:

3,472 earthquakes

Based on the chart I posted originally on November 20, 2015, the uptick in earthquakes in South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma began in 2009.

Here are the statics for South Central Kansas from 2009 through the present:

2,135 earthquakes

When you take the South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma earthquakes together from 2009 through the present, here are the statistics that you get:

5,521

No local news stories yet, but there are reports on KWCH's facebook page:

"Earthquake! Did you feel it? A magnitude 4.8 earthquake, may have woke you up this morning.

Preliminary data from the USGS indicates the epicenter was located 11 miles SW of Medford, OK. The earthquake occurred around 4:20 A.M. CST. More info on the earthquake on the Eyewitness News Morning show starting at 8:00 A.M."

In the comments section on that Facebook post, there are some people that were reporting that they heard a large gust of wind and then felt the shaking.

I didn't hear anything since I was sleeping and was woke up by the shaking, but that is just a really odd thing to see being reported.

One channel has finally picked up the story:

"Sedgwick County dispatchers said they received two calls of people reporting the earthquake and no reports of damage or injuries."

Just thought I felt something again a couple of minutes ago, but who knows it could have been my cats tearing around playing with each other. Will keep an eye on the USGS site to see if anything shows up.

It also says its two miles in depth. Anyone else think this is pretty damn close to the surface?

"Many residents in Kansas overnight felt a large earthquake.

. . .

Residents emailed KSN from Pratt, Otis, Wichita and several other Kansas towns saying it was one of the strongest quakes they ever felt."

I had a friend from New Zealand who also thought that it was awfully close to the surface.

That would explain why it was felt so strongly and for such a long distance.

Another 3.7 just 20 minutes ago:

M 3.7 - 21km SW of Medford, Oklahoma
Time 2015-10-10 10:20:48 UTC-05:00
Location 36.687°N 97.927°W
Depth 5.4 km

This one was even closer to the surface.

There was a 2.9 with a depth of 5.0 km about 13 minutes before that one further southeast.
