They knew that if they got someone who excited the entrenched foolish republican base just enough to win the nomination, but was too ridiculous to sway any near left or independent voters, then Hillary wins simply by default. Any excitement for Trump is a sure vote for Hillary, and a confirmation that they will take this country further towards the direction of Fascism.
