Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39599139 Something like that. When humans gained mastery of the periodic table of the elements, they invented nuclear weapons. Now that we've unraveled DNA, we're sporting designer genes to our own detriment. I wouldn't mind a program to fend off threatening near earth objects such as meteorites, asteroids, comets, and the debris in their tails. That might buy us some time to see if we can somehow find a way to get along without blowing ourselves up or poisoning ourselves. |

Quoting: Berf Snurple I am sure particle physicists as fascinated. CERN's purpose is not to entertain the man in the street. It's job is to make the breakthroughs to help us understand some of creation's biggest mysteries. The scientists may want to gain attention for their ridiculously expensive, geographically expansive, taxpayer funded facility, Quoting: Berf Snurple Unless your are a European citizen, non of that is any of your business. Have you had 28 cents worth of use from the WWW this year? If all web users agreed, that would cover CERN's budget. which yields so very little in terms of practical applicability to the advancement or well being of humanity. Quoting: Berf Snurple Well you look like you are making use of the world wide web, as are 3.2 billion other people today. Previous generations of particle accelerators and nuclear research have given us medical imaging, X-rays, CT scans, PET scans and MRI. Who knows what inventions will follow in the far future from what CERN is doing today . When Prime Minister Gladstone asked Michael Faraday what use was electricity he replied, "Why, sir, there is every probability that you will soon be able to tax it" |

Heck, today we might even want to ask the residents of St. Louis how they feel about the combination of nuclear waste and landfill fires. Last Edited by Berf Snurple on 10/16/2015 09:28 AM |

Take that attitude and you end up living back in a cave. Tell me how terrible particle accelerators are next time, God forbid, you urgently need a medical scan. Does the irony of using the WWW to ask what use is CERN not register with you at all? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 39599139 Australia 10/16/2015 09:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yeah, like if the internet wasnt created we'd be living in some kind of tyrannical barbarian type reality, i dont think humanity could live without CERN.... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39599139 Worldwide, top-down, control of the internet could end up facilitating global tyranny. i was being sarcastic too bro xD as much i use the internet i was born into it. and could see a brighter side to people/humanity using less of the contraption. we defineolty werent ready for the type of connection it brings. still to immature. |

Exactly. It may well be that particle accelerator research contributed somehow to the development of the PET scan or MRI, but I haven't researched the history there. This is similar to the "spin off" technology argument used in support of space program research and development. I'm no Luddite, and I'm not against or in denial of technological spin offs. I just sometimes wonder if money could be saved by direct research into these fields rather than merely capitalizing on spin off benefits from other programs. My original point, actually, was not so much about the research itself, but about the possibility that the hype generated around CERN could have had to do with drawing attention to something that the general public considers unintelligible or boring. I was also making the point that we humans have a tendency to misuse the technologies we master. Last Edited by Berf Snurple on 10/17/2015 01:59 AM |

No, read my first post again. We have X-Rays because William Crookes was accelerating electrons in the worlds first particle accelerator. |

If you want to lobby your congressman to spend more money on medical imaging, be my guest. Meanwhile in Europe CERN has started to unravel some of the mysteries of the universe including the discovery of the Higgs, W and Z bosons, the creation of atomic antimatter and as a spinoff it has given us the WWW. UK budget contribution to CERN this year is £90 million., that's less than one percent of what you pay for NASA. |
