Look up any videos by Elaine Ingham of SoilFoodWeb and Life in the Soil Classes. Good soil is all about having the proper biology (bacteria, fungi, Protozoa, nematodes) and maintaining aerobic conditions. By maintaining proper biology, you don't need fertilizer of pesticides/herbicides.

I am I the process of taking the last course of the 4 courses from Life in the Soil and plan to become certified in 2016. Classes are expensive but if your life depends on the soil, it is worth every penny.
