Theory about video games in the 80's? russia and america
so at university today the topic of 80's video games comes up atari, nintendo all that kind of stuff

long story short the professor states that russia poured millions into the japan toy markets to get these video games created, advertised, and into the hand of every kid in america in the 80's

this caused 2 things to happen

1) kids wasted time and learned nothing except what button makes mario jump. dumbing down the youth. this took them away from family time family bonding, sports and physical activity, and homework/learning.

2) it also kept kids away from computers which was getting big in the 80's and russia knew computers were the future and could exploit american's laziness. why learn a computer and dos when i can just jam this plastic cartridge into this gray box and play hours of mindless football or car racing.

i thought it was an interesting theory

any thoughts on this theory?

So was Magnavox, Coleco and Mattel. Oddysey, Colecovision and Intellivision respectively.

I think your professor is making up a story. If you want to get on his bad side and fail the class, ask him for his sources.

Though this professor of yours is talking about Nintendo, which came after all the other pre-1984 crash originals we listed. It may be possible the Russians saw what kind of havoc the first generation systems had on young kids and decided to exploit that by funding the second generation. I suppose it is possible but I'd have to see his sources on this one.

Is not 'Atari' a Japanese war cry
translated to 'prepare to be attacked'?

Nah, gotta call BS on this one.

Playing video games caused superior hand/eye coordination, leading to better pilots, which led to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Russkies gave up cause they were skeert, cause Russkie kids couldn't afford video games.

Parents who had a brain in the 80's did not buy their kids gaming systems...they bought them computers. After being on the computers, the kids could care less about having a console gaming system.

I remember in 1981 that word on the street in the neighborhood of my friend's house (not in China) was that this family had a computer.

We didn't know them, but for some reason we just went round there one night (was dark, around dinner time) and knocked on the door and asked them if we could see it.

Was a little rude in hindsight...but the father said..'errm it's a little late and we are having dinner'. We kept pressuring a little I guess and he caved in, invited us in and showed it to us. Was some monstrosity with a tiny little green screen all-in-one job (screen was only about 120x120mm). We played some stupid addition game (all they had) until they said I think it's time you boys went home. We didn't know them from a bar of soap.

That was my first time on a computer.
