India sues the Queen for return of 'stolen' £100m diamond
The group, which has called itself the “Mountain of Light” after the translation of the stone’s name, say that the 105-carat diamond was stolen from its true home in India and are demanding that the UK Government returns it.

The stone is “one of the many artefacts taken from India under dubious circumstances”, according to David de Souza from the Indian leisure group Tito’s.
[...]
The jewel was given to the reigning Queen of the time by the last ruler of the Sikhs, Duleep Singh, after the British annexe of the Punjab.
[...]
According to legend, the gem can only be worn by God or women, and whoever wears the jewel will become extremely powerful, but if a man wears it, he will meet an unfortunate end.

Meh... They have been trying this for years, Its not the first nor will it be the last time...

Interesting that they believe that it can only be worn by a woman or a God who it makes all powerfull, but worn by a man it only brings death..

Fine, let them have it - as long as they pay back the hundreds of billions of pounds spent on welfare, housing, free education and healthcare millions of Indians have received in the UK over the past 50 or so years.

Punjab crosses the border between India to Pakistan.. so would have to split the Diamond in 2 and give each country half, plus adding your suggestion that both Indians and Pakistanis go home..

In turn this demand opens up the rift in India/Pakistan, it also opens up the demand for the re-establishment of the Sikh Kingdom.. and according to Sikhs that is when they feel the Diamond should be returned..

Not really Tess, the baggage that goes with this diamond is huge... Punjab is partitioned between India and Pakistan, and the Diamond was given by the Last Sikh ruler on the Punjab, thus in the eyes of Sikhs it should be returned only when the Sikh Kingdom has been re-estabished.. It is their artefact and neither the Hindus or Muslims have shown any respect for their heritage thus they can go whistle if they think the Sikhs are going to let either the Hindus or Muslims get their hands on their cultural/religious heritage.

Going to an interesting one to watch evolve..

You mean give it to the Sikhs or give it to the Hindus? it's a Sikh artefact, giving it back to Hindus would be like giving the Elgin marbles to Turkish..

Give it to the Sikhs I guess. I think the Punjab state government in India is run by Sikhs so give it to them. Pakistan has gotten rid of its Sikhs so they don't deserve it.

If it is given back, what will the Queen use to cut the glass when she has to fix a broken window in the palace?

It certainly is going to be an interesting one... it's a restive enough region as it is, and the Sikhs are pretty keen on re-establishing their own Kingdom again..

Giving it back to India would be a tremendous insult to the Sikhs of Punjab. The Indian government has done nothing but persecute, murder and discriminate against the Sikhs ever since they've had independence from Britain.

In that era - previously Spain and France had empires in many third world countries, then there were Romans, Vikings, more recently Americans. It's called history.

Why not let the bygones be bygones? If you're conquered it's futile to complain. In WWII Russia stole the region of Karelia from us, but we don't make noise about getting it back. Why would we? Russians claimed it in a war and that's it.

The Koh-i-Noor was mined in the Kollur Mine in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh in South India during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th century, while the Sikh religion was only born in the 15th century ! flip

The Sikh emperor was just the last Indian owner of the Koh-i-Noor, not the original owner ! Original owners were Hindus ! 1doh1

"The Mountain of Light or Koh-i-Noor (Persian) is a diamond that was mined at Kollur Mine, in the present state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It was originally 793 carats when uncut.[2] Once the largest known diamond, it is now a 105.6 metric carat diamond, weighing 21.6 grammes in its most recent cut state. The diamond was originally owned by the Kakatiya dynasty, which had installed it in a temple of a Hindu goddess as her eye.[3] The diamond changed hands between various feuding factions in the region several times over the next few hundred years."

Koh-i-Noor is believed to have been mined in the Kollur Mine in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh in India during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th century,[3][6] which had installed it in a temple of a Hindu goddess as her eye.[3]

"In the early 14th century, the army of Turkic Khilji dynasty began raiding kingdoms of southern India for loot (war spoils).[7][8] Malik Kafur, Alauddin Khilji's general, made a successful raid on Warangal in 1310[9] where he might have acquired the Koh-i-noor diamond.[10][11] The diamond remained with Khilji dynasty, and later passed on to the succeeding dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate, until it came into the possession of Babur, a Turco-Mongol war lord, who invaded India and established the Mughal Empire in 1526. He called the stone 'the Diamond of Bābur' at the time, although it had been called by other names before it came into his possession. Both Babur and his son and successor, Humayun mention in their memoirs the origins of 'the Diamond of Bābur'."
