Thermal scans of Egypt's Great Pyramid reveal anomalies
After two weeks of infrared thermal scanning, Egyptian and foreign scientific teams have identified major anomalies at the eastern side of King Khufu’s Great Pyramid in Giza.

The thermal scanning was made at sunrise as the sun heats the structures from the outside, and then at sunset when the pyramids are cooling down. The speed of the heating and cooling phases was used to uncover "anomalies" such as empty areas in the pyramids, which could be internal air currents or different building materials.

Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Eldamaty told reporters at a press conference, which was held Monday night at the step of the Great Pyramid plateau, that the result of the infrared thermography scan on the first row of the pyramid’s limestone blocks shows that all the blocks have the same temperature, with the exception of three which are hotter.

Eldamaty said that these three blocks were “different in formation,” and that a similar situation was also noted in the middle of the eastern side of the pyramid.

He also said that while inspecting the ground in front the eastern side of the pyramid, scientists found "that there is something like a small passage leading up to the pyramid ground, reaching an area with a different temperature.

“What could it be behind it?" Eldamaty wondered, calling on fellow Egyptologists, especially those interested in ancient Egyptian architecture, to brainstorm and join in the research to help in explaining the phenomenon.

Thermal scans reveal strange Pyramid results

NEW thermal scans of Egypt’s Giza pyramids have identified temperature anomalies that may point to a secret passage in the enormous, 4500-year-old Pyramid of Cheops.

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty and technical experts working on the project showed the higher temperature being detected in three specific adjacent stones at the bottom of the pyramid in a live thermal camera presentation to journalists.

The scanning showed “a particularly impressive one (anomaly) located on the Eastern side of the Khufu pyramid at ground level,” the ministry said in a statement. The largest of the three Giza pyramids is known locally as Khufu and internationally as Cheops.

Quite a bit of interesting news coming from the Ministry of Antiquities recently, like this and possibly the discovery of Nefertiti's tomb in close proximity (maybe even hidden behind) King Tut's tomb.

Thank goodness that twot, Zahi Hawass, is no longer minister of antiquities.

This scan was in the works for a long time and just completed it last week, I know the timing is suspicious to us, but there's nothing else to it. Why else does every foreign media carry it and make a big deal.

I'm trying to find out what does this mean? What is this thing with the heated stones? Does anyone have any idea? I just think it's strange they're making such a big deal about it and asking archeologists all over the world to "brainstorm" with them. I thought maybe someone on GLP would have an explanation what it could be.

Note to those who questions the timing! The scan project was planned a long time ago I remember reading it but because I'm not so into this stuff I don't remember exactly when. They started the scan around 25th October, it took 2 weeks to complete. So that had nothing to do with the airplane story.

Archaeologists have studied the Egyptian pyramids for decades, but an untold number of secrets are still buried within the giant monuments. Now, a new project known as "Scan Pyramids" will use radiography tools and thermal imaging to map millenia-old pyramids in Giza and Dahshur, Agence France-Presse reports.

"The idea is to find the solution to the mystery of the pyramids," Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of a Paris-based organization joining the discovery team, tells AFP. "A similar attempt was made 30 years ago, but this is the first project at a global level using cutting-edge technology to look inside the pyramids."

With this new project, scientists hope to discover hidden chambers, while also building models of the exteriors of the four pyramids, Ruth Michaelson writes for The Independent. The project will first focus on Dahshur's Bent Pyramid, then move on to the nearby Red Pyramid. Later, researchers will scan the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Pyramid of Khafre, the Associated Press reports. "There could be interesting things there, even a few meters deep, two or three blocks deep," scientist Matthieu Klein tells the AP.

Archaeologists Will Use Cosmic Rays To Scan The Pyramids In Hopes Of Uncovering Secrets Of Ancient Egypt

How could an ancient civilization have the skills, technology, and ingenuity to build the pyramids of Egypt, one of greatest monuments in the world? It's a mystery that has stumped archaeologists and researchers for centuries, but they will use our modern advancements in technology to scan the pyramids in hopes of uncovering the secrets of ancient Egypt.

A team of researchers from Egypt, Canada, France and Japan are teaming up with the support of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities for a new project called "Scan Pyramids" that will use radiography and thermal imaging tools to nonintrusively scan and map the pyramids of Giza and Dahshur.

"The idea is to find the solution to the mystery of the pyramids," Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of a Paris-based organization Heritage, Innovation and Preservation that is joining the team, told Agence France-Presse. "A similar attempt was made 30 years ago, but this is the first project at a global level using cutting-edge technology to look inside the pyramids."

The team will use cosmic ray muons, which are subatomic particles than can penetrate just about anything, along with drone-mounted scanners, infrared thermography, and 3D reconstruction technology to peer inside the ancient monuments. It's part of an effort to find the pyramid's range in density, discover hidden chambers, and attempt to solve some of the mysteries of just how they were built. They plan to make 3D models after the scanning is done based on combining the different data sets.

Hmm, that would be interesting if they tried to open the Pyramid somewhere else and find something different. It's just amazing after all these years they still don't know everything about those Pyramids. Apparently the whole Giza Plateau has not been completely explored. They did a mapping of it long time ago, but the last years everything stopped kind of. There was something under the Sphynx also they said was the Temple of Osiris and then it disappeared from news. Someone talked about the chamber that contains old writings. Lots of conspiracies about that chamber too.

I remember a few years ago, the whole part was under water and some people commented something happened here. But because of all the stuff going on at the time, we never got a full story. I didn't check on it.

What do you think is there?
