Remember the space-themed online RPG "Earth & Beyond" ? // IT'S BACK ONLINE // --GLP Starfleet Assemble!--
JAN 2021 UPDATE:
I've repinned this one and will edit the original post later today. I've returned to this game recently and have been having a blast with some of the changes over the past 4-5 years. Maybe I'll see you around :)

I've re-pinned this a half-year later, I'll be back with some updates...
 Quoting: AkashicRecord®

(OLD) UPDATE:

It looks like there was an issue with a web link to get to the master account creation page. Use this direct link for now as an alternative: [link to forum.enb-emulator.com]

The patcher program asks if you've setup a master account, it is likely that this still works perfectly fine, but if you use the website instead and try to create the account manually, you might run into a broken link.

I've started a small list of anyone that wants their game character to be known, so everyone knows who's who, and can find each other in-game. Let me know and I'll add you to it.

This game originally came out around 2002-03, and Electronic Arts pulled the plug on it a few years later after buying out its company, Westwood Studios... This devastated the fans and players, as EA simply felt the game wasn't profitable enough (even though it was still relatively thriving.)

After the closure, an emulator project was developed by the community, simply titled the "Earth & Beyond Emulator," and this went on for a number of years. The goal was to recreate a playable server for the (now worthless) game client...

Apparently, they pulled it off, and the game is now free-to-play and has a small community base: [link to net-7.org]

I played the original game during its entire beta, and for some time after release. There was really nothing else like it.

Here's a (somewhat recent) gameplay review:

Hey man looks cool. Downloading now.
 Quoting: Enlightenment

It was a decent and fun game. Even for 2002, it still looks pretty good (my opinion.)

I used to play with a group of at least 4 or so close friends regularly. The game wasn't as big as it is now (this community re-release has added stuff that was not there during the original lifespan.)

I liked the ability to walk around the different space stations, and to be able to fly down to the surface of planets was a good concept, one that I wanted to see in other games!

Players could reverse engineer items and take them apart, rebuilding them and making them better. The ship customizations were fun, and it was always a treat to repaint your spaceship every so often.

I needed a good cheap game to play on this POS system lmfao

I used be able to play minecraft and I loved the shit out of it but this thing is so bogged down

UNLOCKING PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE CLASSES:

There is a way to access some unavailable classes, but you can't do it through the game client.

There is a "Character & Starship Creator" program in the downloads area on the Net-7 site. Download and install that, but there is one more step to unlocking these extra classes..

You'll have to create (or modify) an icon on your Desktop to include a special development option after the executable in the shortcut.

The option to add, is:

-noclassrestrictions

After that, you can use the "Choose Profession" left/right arrows to select them. (I don't believe they are shown graphically so that you can click on them.)

enb-cc
[link to forum.enb-emulator.com]

(This might not all be completely self-explanatory, so I'll try to update or clarify the instructions if anyone has any problems.)

Also, be careful to select a different character slot for the new one than any existing character that you have (if you have an existing character.)

If you are still reading, then you must be interested. Here's how to join in:

- Go to the main Net-7 site (shown earlier) and download the client and patcher.
(These should be the first two listed downloads.)

- Install* the client program, which is actually in the form of a "demo" from
the old beta period.

- Install the patcher (the Net-7 Unified Installer) and follow the guided
instructions.

- Run the LaunchNet7 program, patch**, and then play...

* Ignore anything about a registration key or code, and close any browser window
that might open. (The file unpacking and installation continues, regardless.)

** Run "EnBConfig" from the Net-7 patcher to setup graphics options first!

There will surely be a few that have played this game before it was shut down. It was somewhat popular, but not hugely so. (The game had a sort of "staged" release, so that not too many players would flood the new servers; and it was only around for 2 years anyway.)

This isn't a joystick-based flight game (like Jumpgate was) and it isn't like Eve Online either... There is a decent amount of customization (such as to your ship) and there was (is) a decent amount of content to keep most players occupied for at least a few weeks (or months, if not more.)

Some of the things that are in this game now, were -not- available during its EA-run lifespan. (It was supposed to undergo a gradual series of content updates, and this -does- appear to be happening here with this new community-driven release.)

There will be a few happy people out there if they catch the word that this game is back online (and FREE.)

It's not very likely that a former player would think to check back up on this game without just accidentally stumbling into it again.

It was worth $15 a month; it's definitely worth $0 now.

It should be essentially "unlocked," and as far as I can tell, they are only collecting voluntary donations for server/hosting costs, nothing that is mandatory or expected.

Nice, that's pretty simple.

After installing the E&B Demo client, install their Net-7 Unified Installer and then run LaunchNet7 to patch the client (that might take a little while.)

edit: Forgot to mention, run EnBConfig from the patcher/launcher program when done.

I played a couple things in beta and in release. Originally I gave TT (Terran Trader) a good run and then a TE (Terran Enforcer.) I had a lot of fun with the latter, but the game was a lot smaller then, too.

Sadly, they wouldn't have had access to our old characters. That data would have went with the original company's shutdown. You'll have to recreate the legend. :)

Patching now!

There is a part when installing net 7 that asks you to patch the game and it will open up your index to find what you need to update, I just closed out of that and it seems to be fine, the game will patch when you boot up net 7 after you install it.
