I enjoy the sound of the distant crack of rifle fire.
Another deer rifle season comes to a close. My favorite time of year. I get out in the woods on ambush, my trusty rifle cradled in my arms with just the subtle quiet noises of nature and weather and have time to think as a huMan back in his natural element.
The crack of vicinity rifle fire breaks the quiet and causes a whole shift in thought and reflection. Every sense i have on full alert expecting a whitetail buck to thunderbolt through my fire lane.

The random crackling of rifle fire; one shot here, 3 overthere, reminds me of the sound of skirmishes across the country side. It takes me to Lexington and Concord of the American Revolution. The "Shot heard 'round the world".
The crack of rifle fire reminds me of freedom, of struggle, of self determination, survival, and ability to choose your ground.
The crack of rifle fire gives me HOPE and CHANGE promised but undelivered by others yet potential to bring it with my freedom, my carbine, and my own two hands.
The Crack of rifle fire inspires me and makes me pround to be an American. The American Hunter and Woodsman IS Homeland Security.
The crack of rifle fire is thrilling and gives me hope for USA.

OP, I heard and counted 17 shots today.

live in a rural, but not unpopulated area. Very evenly spaced shots.

wondered what it was - no shooting range here that I know of.

That is because in the city you are out of your natural element. Crowded together with limted resources humans behave badly like rats in a cage. Cities are unsustainable; that's why they find abandoned ones in jungles and under desert sands. I've lived in cities. I would most certainly be armed in my home at the very least.

Sounds like one of your neighbors probably spent a clip or two target shooting a semi auto handgun at a backyard target. We all do that here in my neck of the woods. That's what i mean. Its a traditional american cultural thing. They want to diversify and multi culture us to oblivian. I've just as much right to my gun toting american culture as an atheist or religious nut job has to theirs but mine is under attack while there's is promoted and propulgated under "Tolerance". In the hands of responsible people guns are good, put food on the table and equalize your ability to defend an attack.
