Re: Could humanity be experiencing a continuous time loop
Eternal return (also known as "eternal recurrence") is a concept which posits that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur in the exact same self-similar form an incomprehensible and infathomable quantity of times. The concept has roots in ancient Egypt, and was subsequently taken up by the Pythagoreans and Stoics. With the decline of antiquity and the spread of Christianity, the concept fell into disuse, though Fredrich Nietzsche briefly resurrected it.

In addition, the philosophical concept of eternal recurrence was addressed by Arthur Schopenhauer. It is a purely physical concept, involving no "reincarnation," but the return of beings in the same bodies. Time is viewed as being not linear but cyclical.

The basic premise is that the universe is limited in extent and contains a finite amount of matter, while time is viewed as being infinite. The universe has no starting or ending state, while the matter comprising it is constantly changing its state. The number of possible changes is finite, and so sooner or later the same state will recur. At least one mathematical proof has been developed to disprove this rationale for eternal return.

Dharmic religions

The Bhavacakra represents the eternal cycle of lifeThe concept of cyclical patterns is very prominent in dharmic religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism among others. The Wheel of life represents an endless cycle of birth, life, and death from which one seeks liberation. In Tantric Buddhism, a wheel of time concept, known as the Kalachakra expresses the idea of an endless cycle of existence and knowledge.

Classical antiquity

Scarab on a frescoIn ancient Egypt, the scarab (or dung beetle) was viewed as a sign of eternal renewal and reemergence of life, a reminder of the life to come. See also Atum and Maàt.

In ancient Greece, the concept of eternal return was more connected with Empedocles, Zeno of Citium, and Stoicism.

Renaissance

OuroborosThe symbol of the Ouroboros, the snake or dragon devouring its own tail, is the alchemical symbol par excellence of eternal recurrence. The alchemist-physicians of the Renaissance and Reformation were aware of the idea of eternal recurrence; an attempt to describe eternal recurrence was made by the physician-philosopher Sir Thomas Browne in his Religio Medici of 1643:

And in this sense, I say, the world was before the Creation, and at an end before it had a beginning; and thus was I dead before I was alive, though my grave be England, my dying place was Paradise, and Eve miscarried of me before she conceived of Cain. (R.M.Part 1:59)
[edit]
Friedrich Nietzsche
The thought of eternal recurrence is central to the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. As Heidegger pointed out, Nietzsche never speaks about the reality of "eternal recurrence" itself, but about the "thought of eternal recurrence." Nietzsche first encountered the idea in the works of Heinrich Heine, who speculated that there would one day be a person born with the same thought processes as himself, and that the same was true of every other person on the planet. Nietzsche expanded on this thought to form his theory, which he put forth in The Gay Science and developed in Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

On a few occasions in his notebooks, Nietzsche discusses the possibility of Eternal Recurrence as cosmological truth, but in the works he prepared for publication it is treated as the ultimate method of life affirmation. According to Nietzsche, it would require a sincere Amor Fati (Love of Fate) not simply to endure, but to wish for, the eternal recurrence of all events exactly as they occurred — all the pain and joy, the embarrassment and glory.

Nietzsche calls the idea "horrifying and paralyzing," and says that its burden is the "heaviest weight" ("das schwerste Gewicht") imaginable. The wish for the eternal return of all events would mark the ultimate affirmation of life:

What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' ... Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.' [The Gay Science]
As described by Nietzsche, the thought of eternal return is more than merely an intellectual concept or challenge, it is akin to a koan, or psychological device that occupies one's entire consciousness, stimulating a transformation of consciousness known as metanoia.

In Nietzsche scholarship, the cosmological hypothesis of eternal recurrence is of extreme interest, being a crucial axiom of his philosophy. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra Part III, Ch. 2, #2, "Of the Vision and the Riddle" (German)), Nietzsche confronts his aforementioned inner demon and proves to him the reality of eternal recurrence, and this leads to a self-awakening in which the demon is exorcised. Nietzsche also described himself as "the bringer of eternal recurrence" in Twilight of the Idols. Much effort is still expended in attempts to understand Nietzsche's notebooks' fragmentary mentions of eternal recurrence.

[edit]
Proofs against eternal return
Nietzsche scholar Walter Kaufmann has described a proof originally forwarded by Georg Simmel, which refutes the claim that a finite number of states must repeat within an infinite amount of time:

Even if there were exceedingly few things in a finite space in an infinite time, they would not have to repeat in the same configurations. Suppose there were three wheels of equal size, rotating on the same axis, one point marked on the circumference of each wheel, and these three points lined up in one straight line. If the second wheel rotated twice as fast as the first, and if the speed of the third wheel was 1/π of the speed of the first, the initial line-up would never recur. [1]

That might help explain deja vu. Existance and or sentience as a near perfect echo chamber.

Robert Monroe, now gone, once suggested that it was not some place to be changed, but to be experienced...like a school, or like a prison, depending on your perspective I suppose...might want to read his notes to that effect...

Robert Monroe/The Monroe Institute, Virginia, Book: "Far Journeys", especially....

the last part called "Epilogue: End Game."

...probably from Amazon or ebay etc.

I found it most helpful in analyzing the current earth reality scenario, and helped release me from worrying so much about the game, and more towards understanding the experience.

Also, went to his place once, nice folks.

Re: Could humanity be experiencing a continuous time loop
this continuous time loop theory IMO
would fit the conventional concepts
of both hell *and* heaven; that of
stagnation, no freewill, no choice,
no self-determinism and no growth in
awareness or consciousness.

and Robert Monroe, extraordinary human
being, I agree, his Far Journeys
answers so many questions and you *know*
he is speaking from direct experience,
not just theories or philosophy.

all one needs do is step off...

By controlling the release of news, the MEDIA has effecively stopped time.

The FEAR of the masses is a factor also. Fear inhibits change and conscious expansion.

Since Kennedy was shot. Perhaps back to the beginning of the ROMAN EMPIRE.

Yes omg this reminds me of that one X-files episode where mulder and scully are in a bank and it gets robbed over and over and over again until Mulder starts to remember because it was a time loop trap. That episode is awesome. X-files rocks even though they were way off on some topics...

Re: Could humanity be experiencing a continuous time loop
Round,
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half-forgotten dream
Like the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that I said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
Or the fragment of a song
Half-remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair?

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Listen. Getting it "right" involves humanity learning how to view reality from the "right" perspective. without that then individuals on this planet will be continuously living the same level of awareness in circles. they will turn themselves one way or the other or, potentially, backwards and forwards, rocking first one way then the other and not achieving the transformation. In order for the Transformation of Mind to occur, one principle governing the use of the deep mind must be abandoned, so that the thought formation processes can proceed into the higher level of awareness internally and externally which only reflects upon the individual who seeks it.

We'll be in a time loop, till humanity comes of age, which maybe after 2012.

Always enjoyed the various time loop episodes in Startrek-Next Generation and Voyager.Especially the N.G.episode,when the crew were playing cards and slowly realizing their predicament. The few crew members and their cardgame and their confined space exhuded such an intense time/space anomaly atmosphere IMO...
