Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
Casey, our beloved Chocolate Lab, died this evening at 6:45pm CST. He was 12 1/2 years old. He suddenly started to go downhill Sunday evening, refusing to eat, and not being able to walk. We took him to the Vet early this afternoon, and the x-ray showed he had cancer all through his lungs. The Vet said he had a couple of hours, maybe a few hours until he passed away. We refused euthanasia, as he was going quickly. He did get a pain shot before we left. We brought him home to die with his family. He died peacefully a little over 4 hours after we got home, without any pain, as we all held him.

Yeah, he was just a dog, but he was a cherished member of our family. He was also the ears for Sheba our other dog, who is totally deaf. Casey had been her constant companion for the past 11 years, ever since we brought Casey home from the Humane Society Shelter, after our other dog, Rufus, died. Rufus was also Sheba's ears and her constant companion. Sheba has now outlived both of her best buddies. Poor Sheba is in shock, and just staring into space.

My husband is devastated, as Casey was his buddy too. My kids are inconsolable, and blast it, I can't quit crying. We will bury Casey in our yard in the morning, right by Rufus and our late Fluffy Kitty, close to the Elm tree.

We will donate Casey's arthritis meds and toys to a Vet Clinic that does sliding scale services for low income pet owners.

Awe Tiger sweetie, I am so sorry. : (

Sending my love your way!

I remember the pics you posted a while back of you and your pups.

Thank you, Simple. My husband totally lost it. We all loved that big slobber puss so much. He was as goofy as could be, constantly making us laugh with his clownish attitude, and his funny facial expressions.

I wish I had a pic of Casey, but I lost them all when my computer crashed on me. I do have an old picture of Sheba and Rufus, though. That is the one I have posted before. Rufus and Casey were similar looking dogs, and both about the same size. Sheba is the small white and brown dog, and Rufus is the really big brown dog.

This is the pic I remember. Great photo! Poor Sheba must be lost and heartbroken as well. Be sure to give Sheba lots of love.

You're a great pet owner! hugs

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
There is no such thing as "just a dog."

The sad thing is that we are pretty much destined to outlive our dogs, since they typically do not live as long as humans. This basically means that we will be destined to grieve when our dogs die. Some people don't understand this -- "it's just a dog!"

No "it" is NOT "just a dog!" They become a part of our family. We take care of them, and they confort (take care) of us. People who love dogs, subject themselves to suffering when their friend (who do not live as long as humans) dies.

Is it worth it? Some people would say "No." I say "Yes", even though it hurts when we lose them. They love us. They comfort us -- yes, they (or at least some of them) can tell when we are sad or troubled, and they do their best to make us feel better.

Basically, they love us, and we love them. That alone makes them more than "just a dog."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43993374

You are so right. They are sometimes more human in feeling and compassion than a lot of people. They know when we are sad, and we feel their cold wet noses touching us. When we are sick, they cuddle next to us, to comfort us. They are like furry angels.
How I wish they could stay with us longer. :(

Make sure to hold Sheba close & let her know you are hurting as bad as she is.

Sorry Tiger.....

My big boy Rusty is 14 and while still full of life and pep, will surely succomb to the inevitable. I have been letting him go a little at a time over the last couple years as I know all too well how fast it can come with a dog of his age....

I've lost many pets over the years and it never gets any easier...... Until the new puppy shows up, then the works starts again :)

I am sad for your loss, Tiger. I know the love of a pet, or a family member as I see them.

I found a bunch of scriptures one time that proved to me that there are animals in heaven and my cocker spaniel, Karmael, will be there with all the rest of 'em.

God bless you all.

[link to rainbowbridge.com]

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
Sad story. But there is the "circle of life" aspect to consider, except not in the cavalier fashion it was tossed around above.

To everything there is a season. 12½ years is a good long life for a big dog (which makes me think that Sheba must be a smaller make of dog). This is going to sound trite, and I DON'T mean it that way, but "it's a blessing" (in a way). You probably couldn't have helped but be aware that Casey wasn't the pup he was 12 years ago, but if he wasn't showing ANY sign of illness until Sunday – that's something to be thankful for. And that his "suffering" was short is another good thing. Sure, you'd have preferred to just keep him around for another 12 or 20 years, but that's just not the way things work.

If anything, I think I'm almost a little envious of how this went. Mostly saddened, but I'm feeling just a speck of envy. You didn't have to make the "decision". Well, maybe you did; you made the (correct) decision to bring him home, since he wasn't in any sort of unmanageable agony. There comes a point when we probably do have a Kevorkian duty with our pets: when they're in non-stop pain and they AREN'T going to get better, no matter how hard all the king's horses and men work. Pain is something that we can usually treat, but then you have to ask yourself whether a stoned dog is a happy dog. I can tolerate some pain, so I figure that my dog can tolerate some (key word: some) pain, as well. Casey got to spend his last few hours with his people (and his pal Sheba). You didn't have to deal with a lengthy decline and having to ponder what Casey's "quality of life" was.

I'm going to remember you guys in my prayer tonight. No, I think I'll deal with that matter right now.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's never easy no matter how you try to prepare for it. You simply can't prepare for the loss.
The grief you feel, however, is a measure of how blessed you were for over 12 years. It only hurts so much because you had something so cherished and that you can be forever grateful for.

I feel sorry for those who don't get it, because it means they have never had it. That is the real tragedy.

Much love to you and your family and thank you for rescuing. There is another who needs you when you are ready. He/ she will be waiting.
When the time is right.
In the meantime, grieve. Cry. Shed tears for your loss and remember that those tears are a reflection of the blessing you experienced. You gave a rescue animal a warm loving home and because of it, all lives were forever enriched.

hugs
 Quoting: Sammie

All of our pets are rescues. Casey was from the Humane Society Shelter.
Sheba was wandering loose on the street as a puppy. We found her owner, who didn't want her back because they couldn't do nothing with her because she was deaf. She was kept locked in their basement. We trained her, and so did our previous dog, Rufus. Sheba may be deaf, but she is not dumb.
Our 3 cats were rescues. One was from a shelter, and 2 were on the street.
Our ducks are rescues, one was a injured and permanently disabled survivor of a predator attack that killed the rest of her siblings and mother, and the other one needed a home, as his owner had cancer.
Our parakeet is a rescue. I found her in May during a terrible thunderstorm, on a fence in my alley.
