Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
I am so sorry for your loss. they become so much like family. not easy to say goodbye. as a Lakota when one of mine passes, I do a honoring of life prayer, Thanking God for having such a wonderful friend in my life, and realize what a Blessing it was to have those many years. and I ask God to Welcome him and share all the good things they brought in my life. I also give Thanks for allowing them to have come in my life, they all belong to him, and I give thanks I was allowed to be the caretaker. I have always felt some healing after such prayer, it shows nothing we are given is taken for granted, and we give Thanks to god for the bigs things and the small things he Blesses us with. Hope this is of help to you and all your Loved ones, Mitakuye Oyasi, we are all related.

The only way that your dead dogs will be waiting for you at the gates of heaven is if you belong to Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father. Because God will recreate your dogs for you when you die and go to heaven. And their memory of you will be filled with the good times; when you were with them on the Earth. But if you die without Jesus and go to hell, God will not recreate your dogs to be in hell with you. That would be very cruel and God will not do that!!

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
There is no such thing as "just a dog."

The sad thing is that we are pretty much destined to outlive our dogs, since they typically do not live as long as humans. This basically means that we will be destined to grieve when our dogs die. Some people don't understand this -- "it's just a dog!"

No "it" is NOT "just a dog!" They become a part of our family. We take care of them, and they confort (take care) of us. People who love dogs, subject themselves to suffering when their friend (who do not live as long as humans) dies.

Is it worth it? Some people would say "No." I say "Yes", even though it hurts when we lose them. They love us. They comfort us -- yes, they (or at least some of them) can tell when we are sad or troubled, and they do their best to make us feel better.

Basically, they love us, and we love them. That alone makes them more than "just a dog."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43993374

It's not just that they'[re not "just a dog...." it's that they give us unconditional love. They are always happy when we're around, they never get upset, or angry or too tired to be with us.....

Our pets, our dogs are way more than "just a pet" to us. They really teach us what UNCONDITIONAL LOVE means! They show it and live it with every breath. There is nothing an owner can do that will stop that dog from attempting to love them. I've seen dogs beaten by a human, and five minutes later, if that human calls them over to them, the dog will happily wag their tail and hurry on over.
'
Dogs show us what co-existence SHOULD look like. They accept us, and most of those we bring into our home without question. They follow us, obey us and love us without hesitation.

The whole reason we miss them and mourn for them when they're gone is because we realize how precious their love for us really was/is. Mostly we realize it AFTEr they're gone.

Sorry for your loss, Tiger.

Remember the GOOD TIMES, and smile at every thought of your precious pup.

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
Casey, our beloved Chocolate Lab, died this evening at 6:45pm CST. He was 12 1/2 years old. He suddenly started to go downhill Sunday evening, refusing to eat, and not being able to walk. We took him to the Vet early this afternoon, and the x-ray showed he had cancer all through his lungs. The Vet said he had a couple of hours, maybe a few hours until he passed away. We refused euthanasia, as he was going quickly. He did get a pain shot before we left. We brought him home to die with his family. He died peacefully a little over 4 hours after we got home, without any pain, as we all held him.

Yeah, he was just a dog, but he was a cherished member of our family. He was also the ears for Sheba our other dog, who is totally deaf. Casey had been her constant companion for the past 11 years, ever since we brought Casey home from the Humane Society Shelter, after our other dog, Rufus, died. Rufus was also Sheba's ears and her constant companion. Sheba has now outlived both of her best buddies. Poor Sheba is in shock, and just staring into space.

My husband is devastated, as Casey was his buddy too. My kids are inconsolable, and blast it, I can't quit crying. We will bury Casey in our yard in the morning, right by Rufus and our late Fluffy Kitty, close to the Elm tree.

We will donate Casey's arthritis meds and toys to a Vet Clinic that does sliding scale services for low income pet owners.

I just burst into tears after reading your post. So sorry for your loss. No dog is just a dog. Dogs are amazing creatures like no other. It sounds as if Casey had a wonderful life and, now, a great legacy. Poor Sheba..Casey was her ears..that is so heartbreaking, I can't stand it. I hope she'll be okay, oh my God. Condolences to your family.

Please update about Sheba if you can. I can't stop thinking about her.too_sad

Blast it, I can't quit crying. :(

Sheba is not doing too good. She will not do anything but lay around, staring into space. She went kaka on my back porch/breakfast nook floor this morning. She got it good from one end to the other, except for the spot that Casey was laying when he died. Sheba is well house trained. This is totally out of character for her.I had just scrubbed the floor down, and washed all the rugs last night, so I got to repeat it all this morning.
My husband is so grief stricken, I can't even think about getting another dog. I am not much better at this point. Last night I tried looking at online pictures of available dogs at the local shelters, but my heart is breaking too bad.
I got to go through Casey's toys this morning, so I can drop them off at the shelter when I take his meds to donate. I will keep a couple of his special toys for Sheba.
I called the pet meds place in Wisconsin, to cancel Casey's med reorder. I overpaid last month, so I had a credit of a few bucks. I told them to put it towards another dog's meds, where the family might be struggling to pay. I know what it is like to be on a low fixed income.

As for my truck, I swear I got a bullseye on it, as I was almost hit 3 times this morning, after dropping off my daughter at grandma's. :( My oldest goes over there 2 mornings a week, to help out with my mother, who will be 93 next month.

To top it off, today is my birthday, and I don't want to celebrate anything. My family was supposed to take me out to dinner tonight, but postponed it to Friday. I told them I don't want to go at all. :( Not only do I not have an appetite, but my mouth is still very sore after all the extensive oral surgery I had 2 1/2 weeks ago.
 Quoting: tiger1

Sheba is feeling the same grief your family is....she is also upset because she knows her family is upset.

She will need a LOT of reassurance she will be ok and YOU will be ok.

We just went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago with a rescue dog, just a mutt, as some would call them, a Beagle,German Shepard mix...boy, God played some mean tricks on this little guy but despite all his problems we had him with us over 12 years.

This is our second friend and family member we had to put down in the last two years and now we only have one left....

Death is so sad, no getting around that fact but it does serve to remind us of just what is really important in our lives..it's not our jobs, it's not our stuff...it's our FAMILY!

I wish I could give your entire family a big hug right now, perhaps you would be so kind as to give them all one for me....especially Sheba!

OP, I am very sorry to hear of your loss! This country needs more animal-lovers like you; you're part of the foundations that support a civilized, decent society. I hope you will rescue another dog as soon as you can to give your grieving dog companion still at home a little comfort. I know you can't replace the one you lost but I think the one you lost would want you to go right on loving and caring for dogs. May God bless you with all the resources you need for that work.

Thank you all for your kindness !

My oldest daughter and I took Casey's meds and toys to the Humane Society no kill shelter early this afternoon. We both lost it in the lobby. :( We had adopted Casey from this shelter 11 years ago.

We are giving Sheba extra love and attention, and extra treats. She is eating OK, but is still just laying around. My oldest daughter did get Sheba to play a little bit today. Our cats are giving Sheba extra attention. They are laying down next to her. They know she is having a rough time.

We are all trying to support each other here, furred, feathered, and human. Casey's death has affected every living being in this house. Even the ducks and the parakeet are sad.
I know it sounds crazy, but they all get along, and always have. We have frequently had the cats, dogs, and the ducks all out in the yard together at the same time, and there is no fighting, no squabbles, nothing.
Sheba has been giving my oldest daughter extra slobbers, even though she is so sad over the loss of Casey. My oldest daughter, who is special needs, has really had a very hard time with this. Family is supposed to be sticking together, and we are, even though this is so hard to handle.

Sheba is doing better today, and we all are doing a bit less crying. I think that going through the toys, and donating his toys and his meds, did help us with some closure on this.
What a great dog Casey was ! There is no replacing him, as he was so unique. Our hearts are too heavy to even think about opening our home to another dog for a while, but I want to keep the possibility open.
FYI, Casey almost became a police dog when we brought him home from the shelter 11 years ago. We sent him to Landheim, a very good dog training facility, when we first got him, as he was crated virtually 24/7 by his previous owner, and didn't have a clue about what to do with his new freedom. This facility trains police dogs, and they really wanted Casey for a police dog, but we said no. No amount of money could have pried him away from us, as we knew he was an extra special dog. Casey was extremely intelligent, and easily trainable. [link to www.landheimk9.com]

Thank you all again for your kind words, encouragement, and strong shoulders to lean on during this terrible time for us all. God Bless each and every one of you !!!

So glad to hear that Sheba is doing better. Her heart will take time to heal just like your family's will. While I'm not as eloquent as others who have posted, I'm glad that you'll consider rescuing another homeless dog when the time is right. I think it would be good for Sheba. I have many on the other side and while a new pet can never fill the void of the ones we've loved and lost, the new luvbugs always seem to open up the love in my heart in a new way I never thought possible.

Kudo's for you by not letting Casey go to the police academy. He was meant to be with your family and to help Sheba for the time he was here.

Sending your family, Sheba and your cats that are loving her, lots of prayers, love, hugs and healing energy even though I don't know you. We need more people in this world who love animals as much as you and your family. hf

I'm sorry for your loss. My youngest cat was killed by a car Wednesday. She managed to escape the yard for her first time and that was the result. My wife and I are both devastated. She was only 3 years old this month and the sweetest most loving creature. Every morning and evening we had our routines and now there is a huge hole. We have several other pets, but just that one little fluffball missing makes the house feel somehow empty.

This is so true.

I accidentally left my dog out all night in the rain. He was happy when he came in. Could you imagine the reaction if you did that to a human?
