Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
I'm sorry for your loss. My youngest cat was killed by a car Wednesday. She managed to escape the yard for her first time and that was the result. My wife and I are both devastated. She was only 3 years old this month and the sweetest most loving creature. Every morning and evening we had our routines and now there is a huge hole. We have several other pets, but just that one little fluffball missing makes the house feel somehow empty.

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
Think how much sadder you would be if you never had the time you had with them.

Spoiler, because God killed the 1st animal and Christ kills the last they are bound to undo that and give them a payment. That payment is to be restored to life in the new earth where you see them again and you will have dominion over them and many more versions of 'other flesh' as you terraform wastelands into gardens. The 'reward' for that kind of flesh is that they would know about God and be eternal (eat food to remain alive) but not know about good and evil.

Ho:4:3:
Therefore shall the land mourn,
and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish,
with the beasts of the field,
and with the fowls of heaven;
yea,
the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

So glad to hear that Sheba is doing better. Her heart will take time to heal just like your family's will. While I'm not as eloquent as others who have posted, I'm glad that you'll consider rescuing another homeless dog when the time is right. I think it would be good for Sheba. I have many on the other side and while a new pet can never fill the void of the ones we've loved and lost, the new luvbugs always seem to open up the love in my heart in a new way I never thought possible.

Kudo's for you by not letting Casey go to the police academy. He was meant to be with your family and to help Sheba for the time he was here.

Sending your family, Sheba and your cats that are loving her, lots of prayers, love, hugs and healing energy even though I don't know you. We need more people in this world who love animals as much as you and your family. hf

I hurt for you.
 Quoting: Marsute

I am hurting physically too. Hauling a dog outside to use the bathroom, as we did the last day and a half, was a killer on my back. Casey outweighed me by 30 pounds. Even with 2-3 of us carrying him,it was hard, but it had to be done.

Casey, our beloved Chocolate Lab, died this evening at 6:45pm CST. He was 12 1/2 years old. He suddenly started to go downhill Sunday evening, refusing to eat, and not being able to walk. We took him to the Vet early this afternoon, and the x-ray showed he had cancer all through his lungs. The Vet said he had a couple of hours, maybe a few hours until he passed away. We refused euthanasia, as he was going quickly. He did get a pain shot before we left. We brought him home to die with his family. He died peacefully a little over 4 hours after we got home, without any pain, as we all held him.

Yeah, he was just a dog, but he was a cherished member of our family. He was also the ears for Sheba our other dog, who is totally deaf. Casey had been her constant companion for the past 11 years, ever since we brought Casey home from the Humane Society Shelter, after our other dog, Rufus, died. Rufus was also Sheba's ears and her constant companion. Sheba has now outlived both of her best buddies. Poor Sheba is in shock, and just staring into space.

My husband is devastated, as Casey was his buddy too. My kids are inconsolable, and blast it, I can't quit crying. We will bury Casey in our yard in the morning, right by Rufus and our late Fluffy Kitty, close to the Elm tree.

We will donate Casey's arthritis meds and toys to a Vet Clinic that does sliding scale services for low income pet owners.

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
There is no such thing as "just a dog."

The sad thing is that we are pretty much destined to outlive our dogs, since they typically do not live as long as humans. This basically means that we will be destined to grieve when our dogs die. Some people don't understand this -- "it's just a dog!"

No "it" is NOT "just a dog!" They become a part of our family. We take care of them, and they confort (take care) of us. People who love dogs, subject themselves to suffering when their friend (who do not live as long as humans) dies.

Is it worth it? Some people would say "No." I say "Yes", even though it hurts when we lose them. They love us. They comfort us -- yes, they (or at least some of them) can tell when we are sad or troubled, and they do their best to make us feel better.

Basically, they love us, and we love them. That alone makes them more than "just a dog."

Re: My Dog Died Tonight. :(
For the person who anonymously left me the message with the green. I have looked at some pics of dogs available at the local shelters, but I cannot seem to find one that would be a perfect fit. I sincerely believe another dog will just show up here, as has happened to us before, with Sheba.

Here is how Sheba became a member of our family:

A little over 12 years ago, there was a bad car accident right around the corner from our house. We heard the boom, and my youngest and myself went running to see if it was one of our neighbors. It was no one we knew, but the 2 cars were badly damaged, and a corner house had it's wrought iron fence destroyed.
There was this cute white puppy with brown spots wandering around the accident scene. A fireman told us that he was taking the cute puppy home, which made my youngest sad, as SHE wanted to take the puppy home. So, we turn to walk back to the house. Just as we get to the front door, the puppy showed up right behind us !!! Of course we brought her in !!!
We later found the current owner, who kept her locked in the basement, as he said he could do nothing with her, as she was totally deaf.He didn't want her back. Sheba is deaf, but she is NOT dumb ! We also found the original owner, who's dog was her mother. We found out her deafness was genetic, that she was from a litter of 12,her birth date, and that her original name was Jewel.

A few months later, Sheba became the poster puppy to quash a proposed ordinance in my city that would have banned ALL 5 breeds of Bull Terriers, not just Pit Bulls. Sheba ended up saving a lot of innocent dogs in my city from either being killed needlessly, or losing their homes.

FTR, Sheba is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and her mother dog was an AKC registered Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Sheba may grieve for a long time. Years ago we had a border collie mix and her little buddy, a shepherd/rottweiler mix. The border collie died suddenly and even though her friend lived another six years, he never again was the happy, playful boy he had been. He was a good dog, he loved us, and he was mostly content, but he watched over her grave and always seemed to be looking for her to come out of the woods and play with him. Just love on Sheba, but expect her to be changed. My heart goes out to her and your family.
