I looked over at my footprint in the dirt yesterday..as I was sitting by the fire. Couldn't believe how small they looked.


I had a roommate in college that took me camping more than once. She told me..never leave anything but footprints.


So it goes for most females. The world around.

Males are so much bigger.

The dream just reinforced that..

Yes. I watched my partner chop wood..logs..and felt somewhat worthless by comparison. To swing an ax and split a round piece of wood. Took many strikes.

I wondered about the homesteaders..that chopped up logs to built a house..with the logs they found and cut and groves they honed and fashioned to stack..and how cold and hard and difficult that had to be.


Camping is hard and cold and dirty for a reason.

To remind us how much those that came before..made it so we didn't have to suffer what they did.

It seems the entire point.

From all the way back.

No one wants those they love..to hurt the way they did, to get the things they provided.

It's part of it. A big part.

Maybe the biggest.

Like a swing over water. That cost $13. I wanted to, too.

I watched a bunch of these earlier. I realized my own perceived helplessness in regard to wood chopping, was misinformed and ignorant.

it´s not hard. you gotta work with the weight of the tool.

I'm gonna definitely give it a try. I would probably want to start with a splitting maul and not an axe. I've used a hatchet to cut kindling, many times..but never an ax.

here´s a weird axe innovation i just remembered from the tube



clever design.

Letting the weight do the work..is a large portion of how I pound rings with a rawhide mallet, as one of the final processes before they are for sale. I do huge piles of them at once.

There is a certain technique(hold the mallet loose) that if you do it wrong(too tight)..pounding for hours on the steel mandrel, can damage your wrist and cause a lot of pain.

Too much weight can dent the silver/copper and such.

Getting it just right is key. :)

And yes, you can absolutely learn to use an axe.
They come in different weights to, not only between splitters and axes, but different axe heads.

Think I told you before of the girl from one of my dojos. Tiny little thing I could pick up with one hand.
I wouldn't want to fight her... Haha.
Size is only one portion. Speed and agility are equally as powerful as brute strength.
