Good episode with a lot of parallels to today.


I wonder if Rick and Morty got their idea for the Gooble Box from that episode. Not sure which came first but the Black Mirror episode is over 10 years old.

I recall reading a Dean Koontz book as a teen, not sure which, where a boy basically becomes part of and grows into his computer.

Like an alien life-form or fungus, through some sort of symbiosis.

I still have the mental image of him sitting there attached to the computer.


Wouldn't mind reading that bit again to refresh my memory after 30 years.

They are locked inside of cubes that display really obnoxious media at them constantly where they sleep, they can choose to 'skip ads' but it costs them credits they earn by riding the stationary bike during the day.

Skipping an ad isn't cheap and they are often sexual in nature. If you close your eyes, a high pitch alarm will sound until you open them and it resumes the ad.


For 15 million merits, which take about 6 months of peddling to earn, you can buy 1 golden ticket for a chance of 'wowing' some judges who then offer the person a chance to get out of the box, as long as they are willing to sell part of their soul for it.

For the female it was showing her tits. For him it was channeling his rage into a broadcast those still in the cubes would consume 2x week.
