Greater fool theory

In finance, the greater fool theory suggests that one can sometimes make money through the purchase of overvalued assets ;items with a purchase price drastically exceeding the intrinsic value; if those assets can later be resold at an even higher price.

In this context, one "fool" might pay for an overpriced asset, on the assumption that he can probably sell it to an even "greater fool" and make a profit.

This only works as long as there are new "greater fools" willing to pay higher and higher prices for the asset. Eventually, investors can no longer deny that the price is out of touch with reality, at which point a sell-off can cause the price to drop significantly until it is closer to its fair value

Signs of an Unknown Solar 'Tsunami' Have Been Discovered Deep Inside Earth's Ice

Judging by the ratio of chlorine-36 to beryllium-10 isotopes, this event may even have been larger than the largest solar storm recorded to date in other ice cores and tree rings, dated to the year 774.

Both of these prehistoric storms were much larger than anything we have seen since the 1950s, "thus implying a so far underestimated threat to our society", according to the authors of the paper.

"These enormous storms are currently not sufficiently included in risk assessments," says Muscheler.

"It is of the utmost importance to analyze what these events could mean for today's technology and how we can protect ourselves."

Otherwise, the Sun could catch us wholly unprepared.

Thread: IMPENDING FERTILIZER PLANT EXPLOSION-WINSTON SALEM NC (Page 2)

I am going to tell you something most people don’t know.

Years back I went to work for one of the biggest chemical companies in Texas. They were located smack dab residential. The liability was HUGE. They had NO auditing. They sold chemicals for everything. Everything.

The first thing I noticed is that they used a lot of day temp labor because of the exposure to bad fumes. I’m sure they got sick and just got replaced. They did not speak English.

I got upset and decided I was going to report them because honestly there were a million accidents waiting to happen.

I looked up what government agency to report them to.

Guess what? They report to no one.

Other than giving the local fire departments some haz mat sheets they report to the national chemical association which is like their own watch dog group. So if you happen to live near one of these chemical companies you should be aware....they pretty much do whatever they feel like.

That is how so much meth was made.

They might have changed some of these laws by now but I have not read anything. Pretty scary actually.

Didn't Einstein come up with his theory while riding a train?

Einstein described how at age 16 he watched himself in his mind’s eye as he rode on a light wave and gazed at another light wave moving parallel to his. According to classical physics, Einstein should have seen the second light wave moving at a relative speed of zero. However, Einstein knew that Maxwell’s electromagnetic equations absolutely require that light always move at 3 × 108 metres per second in a vacuum.

Nothing in the theory allows a light wave to have a speed of zero. Another problem arose as well: if a fixed observer sees light as having a speed of 3 × 108 metres per second, whereas an observer moving at the speed of light sees light as having a speed of zero, it would mean that the laws of electromagnetism depend on the observer.

But in classical mechanics the same laws apply for all observers, and Einstein saw no reason why the electromagnetic laws should not be equally universal. The constancy of the speed of light and the universality of the laws of physics for all observers are cornerstones of special relativity.

^Too few clips of this movie.

 Quoting: Seer777

“The Radium Girls” and the lasting legacy of Marie Curie

The plight of the Radium Girls has all the intrigue you could want in a story: ordinary young women with high hopes and dreams of a better life, cut down by devastating illness marked by mystery and conspiracy on the part of industry moguls, who fight for their lives and their legacy in their homes and in courtrooms, bringing to light an important cautionary tale about the darker side of living in human society.

But the legacy of the Radium Girls has a positive aspect, showing that change is possible when we have more complete information about the world around us and the will to create a just and healthy society. It also frames important issues about the legacy of scientific discovery. We are often quick to look before we leap in our excitement over new hopes and promises spurred by scientific discovery (sometimes coupled with instances of savvy but misleading marketing). Yet, we do nonetheless continue to debate the pros and cons of applications of new research. Even through the dark chapter of the glow of radium, we’ve moved forward in our knowledge about the world around us.

The forward progression of knowledge continues, even as the basis of understanding shifts back and forth in the self-correcting nature of scientific discovery. How we use that knowledge is the true test of our society. Learning from the past can create a brighter future, when we put our knowledge and ingenuity to work.

This is the legacy of scientific discovery as a whole, and of Marie Curie’s remarkable radium.
