IDK how you folks roll in the States, but over here, if a dude has long hair, he's guaranteed to attract an ass whooping to himself. I'm not saying that's fair, but that's how other guys tend to react towards a guy who has hair like a woman.

The individual can also be doing a Nazirite vow, which requires that the man not cut their hair.

For some, it's a spiritual thing. Even in the armed forces, Sikhs are allowed to keep their hair long (covered by the turbans). Their turbans look like it is all cloth, but it is all hair.

In the 60's, it was also a spiritual, back to the earth kind of thing. It was radical at the time and a sure sign that the wearer had STRANGE ideas. Today, even some bikers wear their hair long in a ponytail to almost the waist. I don't think there are too many people (at least to their faces) that consider them gay. Samson, himself, probably had hair down to his waist. With him, it was a source of strength.

Jesus also had long hair--at least down his back. This was also typical of the Nazarenes.

If I still had hair on the top of my head, I would have no problem wearing it long. It was part and parcel of my generation.
