Anonymous Coward User ID: 69797435 United States 01/23/2016 07:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you assume the 8" per mile is accurate, it would still be difficult to observe this in a distant ship. Let's assume you are 5' 6" tall and are standing on the beach a couple of feet above sea level. Your point of observation (your eyes) is roughly 7' or 84" above sea level. This means that the ship would have to be 10 1/2 miles (84" divided by 8) out to sea before the earth's curvature even began to obscure the hull of the ship. On a large ship (in calm seas) you probably wouldn't even notice until about 10 feet of the bottom of the ship was no longer visible. This would require the ship to be over 25 miles away from you. If there are waves even only a few feet high, You could add another 4.5 miles to the distance required before you would be able to notice the difference, at least when the ship was on the crest of a wave. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69797435 United States 01/23/2016 07:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Using the theorem of Pythagoras a2 = 39632 + 12 = 15705370 and thus a = 3963.000126 miles. Thus your position is 3963.000126 - 3963 = 0.000126 miles above the surface of the earth. 0.000126 miles = 12*5280*0.000126 = 7.98 inches. Hence the earth's surface curves approximately 8 inches in one mile. mathcentral.com is one of hundreds of websites where you could confirm this equation. |
