For some reason, this really got to me. Had no idea how sharply the variety of food available has declined, and I mistakenly regarded myself as somewhat well informed. Yet another invitation to extinction.

This is why top-down management and is so dangerous. It is an invitation to famine. The Irish only planted one or two varieties of potato back in the 1800s. If there were enough natural variety in the kinds planted, the whole country wouldn't have been wiped out. The disease that attacks the most commonly planted form of wheat is out there and, for the moment, controlled.
