Well, suddenly there's a scramble in the media to write this off as being caused by fighter planes doing exercises.

The ground is frozen...

"“Frost quakes,” also known as cryoseisms, are a natural phenomenon that occurs when extremely cold temperatures lead to sudden deep freezing of the ground, after it has been saturated with water."
 Quoting: nutmeg

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47045624

It's been 20 degrees and colder every night since the 20 inches of snow fell. It has to do with the frozen ground.

Why are you calling me a dumbass if YOU don't know the answer?

Here's what you are missing

These Booms/Shaking in NJ happened today during the afternoon.
At the time it was in the upper 30s across most of NJ.

For a "frost quake" to occur the ground has to be saturated with water and then rapidly freezes during a quick vast drop in temperature.
Today when the event happened in NJ the sun was out and it was in the upper 30s meaning if anything the ground was thawing.

There can't be a frost quake when it's above freezing temp which it was in NJ when all this happened.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47045624

I live in south Jersey. The ground isn't thawing yet since it's been 17- 20 degrees every night. The 20-25 inches of snow everywhere is melting. I am just reporting what the geologists have said happened. ....frostquake.

A cryoseism, also known as an ice quake or a frost quake, is a seismic event that may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice. As water drains into the ground, it may eventually freeze and expand under colder temperatures, putting stress on its surroundings.

Just don't call me a dumbass when YOU don't have the answer!

I'm in SE PA...about a week ago late at night I felt a weird sensation in my ear and then immediately my dishes rattled for a few seconds...

Felt some minor movement today but no ear sensation or rattling

Does anyone know how far sonic booms travel?

The Ramapo Fault sits on the North American Plate, which extends past the East Coast to the middle of the Atlantic, where it meets the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an underwater mountain range in constant flux. The consequences of this intraplate setting are huge: First, as Gates points out, “The predictability of bigger earthquakes on…[such] settings is exceedingly poor, because they don’t occur very often.” Second, the intraplate setting makes it more difficult to link our earthquakes to a major cause or fault, as monitors in California can often do.

Re: Earthquake in NJ?
so there was a same incident earlier this week in Charleston SC, on Jan 26

people felt an earthquake or a sonic boom in the Lowcountry about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Viewers in North Charleston, Summerville, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, Moncks Corner, Goose Creek, Hanahan, Hollywood and St. Stephen are among those reporting windows rattling and houses shaking.

A spokesperson for Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort confirmed Tuesday afternoon planes were in the air at the time of the boom, conducting exercises 15 to 20 miles off the coast.
But it is not confirmed that those planes created a sonic boom reported across the area.

The ground is NOT frozen.
Not to any great depth. We've been having this el Nino winter, and the temps have hardly ever been below freezing during the daylight.
We only got the Jonas blizzard because a fast moving cold system moved in to dump on us.
Sunday it was sunny and above freezing.
Wedsday eve into Thursday, the air temps only just dropped below freezing.
The only time I ever recall hearing the ground cracking from the freeze was as a child in western Canada when it was an extended deep freeze.

New Jersey’s McGuire Air Force Base does not house aircraft capable of breaking the sound barrier.

While the North American Aerospace Defense Command conducted a military drill in Florida yesterday, it denies involvement in today’s sonic boom. A NORAD spokesperson said they are not conducting any activity in the region today.

However...just found this on CNN:

"An F-35C being tested by the Navy caused the booms, the military said Thursday evening. Military aircraft routinely conduct supersonic flights but the sonic booms are rarely felt on ground. However, under certain atmospheric conditions there is an increased potential to hear the sound, according to a statement from Naval Air Station Patuxent River."
