Need info about dogs and seizures | |
miffed nli User ID: 71342744 Australia 01/29/2016 11:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So sorry to hear about your dog! My dog used to have seizures. I put him on an all natural diet which lessoned them but they never went away. I read into the medication for seizures & decided against them as they have their own set of side effects which would kill him in the long run anyway. They also wouldn't eliminate them completely. I found my dog unable to walk, in the garden after his last seizure & when I took him to the vet he told me that the seizures bit by bit killed his brain & he no longer knew how to walk & was also having trouble breathing. He gave him the needle then & there to send him off to doggy heaven. I had rescued Buddy from the pound & believe he was left there because of his seizures :( If I was you I would look into natural remedies & not prescription meds because from what I can remember they are really bad for a dogs kidneys & other internal organs :) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 40431185 United States 01/29/2016 11:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi op my chihuahua has idiopathic epilepsy. We have been to the regular vet and the neurologist for pets. Idiopathic means they can't find the cause. She had a head injury a year prior that they are suspecting its the cause. I would eliminate all store food and no food from China or treats from China. Only buy a very high end dog food if you can find it. sojos and honest kitchen are very good. My dog is on the original sojos formula and I add organic beef from Costco. I noticed she gets more seizure activity after eating chicken and fruit. Get rid of all chemicals in your house and fragrances such as heavy detergents and febreeze type scents as this can cause seizures. Swifter mops also can cause seizures. My dog is on the lowest dose of phenobarbital which is working well controlling her seizures. I wish I would of tried holistic to control her seizures first though. Their are a couple products that are very good. On Amazon their is doc ackermans epilepsy formula that gets really good reviews. You can also check only natural pet store .com for herbal holistic seizure meds. If you see your dog seizure over 5 minutes it is a medical emergency I am not sure if you knew this or not? Also don't give your dog yearly vaccines. You can research online that they don't need it. I only do titer checks now. The yearly vaccines can ruin pets health. |

I also have been giving her milk thistle and burdock to flush her liver as phenobarbital is hard on the liver. With the added herbs her liver levels have remained normal. Initially it's more important to control the seizures. If your dog has more thne one seizure a month or cluster seizures the vet will want to put your dog on phenobarbital. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 40431185 United States 01/29/2016 11:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My chihuahua almost age 13 (March 24th he'll turn 13) had his first seizure. Lasted about w or 3 minutes. I took him to Banfield right afterwards, of course I was freaked out. They took blood test, check his heart and everything was fine with him. They told me watch him for next 24 hours and if he has another one, he'll need to see a nuerologist. Quoting: Indysmindy They also gave me a prescription for tranquilers ( 2 and it cost me $465, the office visit was another $300). They told me to buy the tranquilizers and give it to him if he has another seizure. Now this past Monday he had another one, lasted about 3 minutes. I gave him the tranquilizer. He was distraight for a while n hot n hyper after a while them calmed down. Now my question is this, is this common in older dogs and is ther any way I can buy medicine for him that is less expensive. I want to see a vet tomorrow and be prepared with questions about my dog. Any advice or input? Plus, should I purchase health insurance for him now, since this med is expensive? Any info on health insurance for dogs? $465 is way too much . I got 6 month supply of phenobarbital pills for about $75 for my dog. |

User ID: 23435022 United States 01/29/2016 11:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My Shih Tau went through them. They took blood work, but that only tells them so much. The X-rays on the brain will tell them if your dog has a tumor. Which it sounds like if the blood work came back okay. My dog had her first then maybe a month later had her second. Then it got more frequent. Then it was 2 - 3 times a day. I said, she cannot go through this anymore. I put her down, best decision for her. Dogs can get stuck in them, where it will last and then they have a slow break then back on again. I couldn't risk my dog going into that. If your dog is having more and more at 13. I'm sorry to say, it's time to put your beloved dog down. I don't say it easily. When I knew she was out of pain, I felt her freedom. My dog was on the vet drugs too. I gave him my left over ravioli which had these 2 ingredients, which caused a seizure. I narrowed it down to those 2 ingredients after some googling, and he hasn't had one since, because I am very mindful of the contents of table scraps. Did he/she get into anything, trash or scraps? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 71341371 Netherlands 01/30/2016 12:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | #1 cause of seizures in dogs is topically applied flea treatments - PERIOD! Different brands have different active ingredients (like pyrethrin, fipronil, etc., etc.) but these are all insecticides used for termination of pests like ants, cockroaches, termites, farm pests etc. The active ingredients work by short-circuiting the insect's nervous system and that is exactly what it does to a good percentage of dogs. When you use these you are applying this crap straight on your dog for absorption into their bloodstream. Some dogs can handle it - but many cannot. An aging dog may not be able to handle it as well as a younger one. So - your dog may naturally be having seizures but I urge you to investigate your flea meds, I speak from experience. I took mine off and used an alternative product and never had another problem. |
