List time I was in Chicago was 7 years ago.

I say this as someone who grew up in Chicago. People there are mixed about him. Even people who vote Dem just have a passing respect for him, he's not a savior or anything. I'd say that privately, more people dislike him than like him.

But despite the love/hate relationship - never underestimate the desire of Democrats in Illinois, and especially in Chicago, to propose something like this with the sole intent of pissing off Republicans.

South side is bad in the usual areas, and there is absolutely nothing there for a tourist to even do.

Downtown/North side (tourist area) is just as safe as any other city. Chicago is the most segregated city in the country. Your neighborhood is either very white, or very black, or very latino.

When you grow up in Chicago, you're essentially trained from birth to think Dems = good, Repubs = evil. Put it this way, there are 50 governmental districts in Chicago. All 50 of them have a Dem representative at city hall. 50-0.

So for Dems in Chicago, it's more that they had the true "hope/change" thing going for a long time when he was elected. Aside from that, there is a certain pride that comes with the fact that he was from the city. Then his presidency went to shit. So the pride is still there but the disappointment in his presidency counters it, and that even goes for Dem voters.
