Did the swarms in Indo happen before the big one, after or both?? Would be interesting to nail down pattern and get a better idea if the 8.2 was the beginning, or the end of something.... From what I remember the swarm started after the big one. There were several earthquakes before the big one, a matter of weeks before it. I dont remember their depths and though I did save at the time the charts showing last 30 days activity, I lost them when I formatted my PC. But the big one caused the whole thing to go haywire and it lasted for another 2 months or so, during which another big one occured, a magnitude 8. Somewhere in January 2005. Then it gradually slowed down by the half of February. It would be nice if someone saved those charts, I think it would be shocking to see the number of earthquakes there. Quoting: 89446For a little clarity, the Indonesian quake is a quite different fault line and fault type, one is a strike/slip and the Kuril area is a subduction fault, one of the reasons given for the constant depth readings is the subduction fault is in a horizontal plane. (do not rule out other possibilities) This is the area of the fault from an aerial view [ link to earthquake.usgs.gov] For an in depth (pun intended) synopsis of the preceding events on the same fault line go here.
