Water Collection, Purification, Filtering, Storage and Use.
Collection:
-----------
Sources include Oceans/Seas, Lakes/Ponds, Rivers, Streams, Wells, Rain/Snow, Ditches, Pools, Dew, Plants, Dirt

Some methods of getting water from Sources include Pumps, Buckets, Cups, Condensation, Natural fiber Towels, Real Sponges
Clean Plastic Sheets, Tarps can be used to funnel rain into buckets to then filter.

Purification/Filtering:
-----------------------
What is in Water, that you want to get out of it before use.

Toxic metals (Lead, Mercury, Aluminum, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, etc.)
Additives (Chlorine, Chloramines, Fluoride) Yes Flouride is Toxic.
Chlorination By-Products (Trihalomethanes or THMs)
VOCs and other Organic Compounds (Pesticides, Herbicides, Pharmaceuticals, Fuels)
Bacteria and viruses (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, etc.)
Radioactive substances (Radon and Uranium, etc.)

Boiling Water well (hot and long enough) will Kill Bacteria, Viruses and Parasites
but it may not remove all chemicals such as Drugs, and Industrial and Farm type Chemicals
or reduce the Toxic Metals and may actually concentrate Fluoride due to Evaporation.

Filters vary by type in what they will remove or kill in the water they process.
Pre-Filtering your water will prolong the life of your Main Filter system, by keeping
it cleaner and slowing the clogging up process from contaminants.
Coffee filters, Green Grass, Clean Socks, T-shirts, Towels can all act as pre-filters
to help remove particles(mud) from the Water you put in your Primary Filter extending it's life.

The things that Filters "may" remove or reduce include Particles, Drugs/Chemicals, Viruses,
Bacteria, Parasites,

gravity-fed filters (put the "dirty" Water in the top, water goes through filter pulled
by gravity and collects in the bottom) - NO Electricity Required
Ceramic:
Ceramic Filters will usually remove most Bacteria and parasites and reduce Heavy Metals
Ceramic Filters with Silver in-bedded in them will also kill most Viruses

Carbon:
Carbon Filters will reduce Chemicals and Drugs by binding them to the Carbon.

Ceramic/Carbon/Silver Filters: have a slow filter rate, that keeps the water in touch
with the filter longer giving more time to Clean/Kill/Bind the bad stuff in the Water
to produce a cleaner filtered water.

Common Brands of Ceramic type filters include: Doulton, Berkey, and Propur

Pitcher style filters such as Brita and PUR Water filters are inexpensive
they use a Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) plant husks that are heated
to high temperature without Oxygen to activate it, make it adsorb more.
Zero Water and ClearlyFiltered Pitchers use Staged filters that remove
more than those that use only Carbon.

ClearlyFiltered pitcher
Filter lasts for up to 200 gallons (approx. 300 fill ups) and is designed to remove common tap water contaminants such as fluoride and chlorine. It is also tested and certified to remove 99.9% of giardia, cryptosporidium and many other common toxins found in unfiltered water. As with all Clearly Filtered products, the pitcher is made from 100% BPA free, non- leaching plastic. This filter has been independently tested to exceed all EPA, NSF & ANSI standards for drinking water.
Filters are made in the USA.

-------------------------
Fine Mesh Synthetic Fiber:
The Sawyer MINI Water Filter is rated to 0.1 micron absolute, weighs only 2 ounces,
and filters up to 100,000 gallons

The Sawyer filter removes taste that comes from bacteria, dirt, and green matter.

Chemicals
The Sawyer filter does NOT remove iron, sulfur, other chemicals, or simple compounds.

Heavy Metals
The Sawyer filters are not made with charcoal. While other portable filters have charcoal, they lack in amount of media and

adequate dwell time. Therefore, they only remove small amounts of heavy metals, pesticides, etc. (when used in real life

applications). Try using better sources of water, if possible.
-------------------------
Using any Water filter at below freezing temperatures has the risk of damaging the filter, always
allow time in a above freezing area for the filter to dry completely out before moving it into
air below freezing to avoid damaging the filter. If any water filter has been exposed to freezing temperatures
while it was wet/damp it should be considered possibly damaged and should be only used as a pre-filter to
reduce particulates and NOT relied on to kill or remove viruses/Bacteria/parasites.

Carbon only filters can freeze and when thawed still retain the ability to bind to chemicals.

Condensation:
-------------
Dew can be collected in the morning off plants using a natural fiber Towel, ringing out the water into a container
when it becomes wet from wiping off leaves and grass.

a plastic bag placed over green leaves in the sun will collect moister inside the bag, if it is tied around a branch.

Solar Still, a plastic sheet placed over a whole dug into moist dirt will collect the moisture on the earth facing side of the plastic sheet, putting a rock in the center will cause all the water to run/drip to the center of the sheet to be collected in a cup/bucket. Dirty water can be added to the dirt in the hole to distill it into the collection cup/bucket.
Small rocks can be used around the edges of the hole to hold the plastic sheet in place, use a small light rock to pull the plastic down in the center, without pulling out the plastic from the edges. If rocks are hard to find, use small tree branches or objects you have with you to hold the plastic down at the edges and slope it to the center. The better the Seal you have all around the edges, the faster the condensation will build up on the plastic and collect in your container.

Chemicals:
----------
Bleach and Iodine type Tablets take time to work/kill the Viruses/Bacteria/Parasites in the water,
and must be given time after use to evaporate
or in the case of some Iodine/Chemical tablets be neutralized by a second type of tablet.
These methods do not remove Metals and Chemicals from the Water and add "chemicals" to the Water
that may remain after their use.

Storage:
--------
-Best to have good Stainless Steel and heavy duty NON BPA Plastic water containers.
-If you are at a Homestead or Permanent Camp Glass Wine Bottles with good stoppers/Caps are good
they have the advantage of being Clear so you can see what is inside, and how full they are.
-have Brushes like they sell to clean baby bottles to clean your canteens and thin containers.

Ways to clean large containers with small openings
1) Fill with 25% Warm water with soap, Swish and rotate container, then Rinse till
no Soap bubbles come out.
2) For extra clean with abrasive, use small clean rocks and or burnt charcoal from your fire
in dime size pieces or smaller with 25% fill of Warm water and swish and Rotate the container
until every part is rubbed clean, Then rinse with Warm water and Soap, then Rinse with clean water
till no Soap bubbles come out.

-Never Drink directly from your Canteens/Bottles unless you have not Cup to use.
Backwash of bacteria from your mouth can/will grow in your canteen/Bottle unless you clean them
well and completely which will increase your risk of infection and spading disease to those you share
them with.

-Only Store your Clean/Purified water in the big containers,
and pour water into Cups to Drink, they are much easier to clean and keep clean.

-If you have to use some big containers to transport Dirty water to be filtered later
make sure you and all those with you know which containers contain Raw/Untreated Water
so it is not accidentally consumed or used to waspamandardizing What State of Water goes
into certain type of containers is good, Labeling the Containers is Best.

-If you use Filters to Clean your water, make sure there is no leaks or drips of dirty
water bypassing your filter into the Clean Water collection area.

-If any dirty/unfiltered water gets into your clean water you should clean your
collection Container and start over.

-Never fill containers more than 85% full in winter to give water room to expand,
so if they freeze, the water will have enough air/room to expand and not rupture your containers.

-If you have to Travel on Foot without a heated vehicle a Insulated Thermos can slow
the freezing of your water, if you start with Hot water it can remain liquid for a long time
in a good thermos.

-Putting Small containers like Flasks or canteens inside your pockets and Coat can keep some
of your water supply liquid while you travel.

-Warm your Steel bottles carefully by the Fire, with the Plastic Caps off for expansion before you leave
camp/home to make sure your water will be usable during your travel make sure to leave 15% free space
for freezing if they get to cold and freeze. Wrap them in insulation(cloths or blankets) in your pack
to keep them warm longer.

Storing water in copper or brass will kill bacteria.

A hospital near here has replace door handles and some counter tops with brass and copper materials because of the bactericidal properties.

 Quoting: GFX guy

No. A water softener uses Ion Exchange in order to grab onto the hardness that is coming from your city water. The salt is used in the regeneration cycle, the brine water is used to release the Ion Exchange in the pressure tank, which is then drained into your washer drain, or a dry well.

You get such a small percentage of sodium, it is nothing compared to the total dissolved solids that are coming in off of your city water.

However, if you live up North, the water quality is usually much better.

There are conditioning systems for wells, rust, sulfur, chlorine, and many others.

The only issue is the companies that you have to deal with. A lot of water conditioning companies like to screw the customer over, better to find a small family run business that doesn't jew their consumer base.

Water softeners usually last 10-20+ years, the resin in the pressure tanks have to be replaced every 8-10 years, even that you can do yourself with an extractor that uses your water hose, or an air pump, then dump your new resin back in the tank with a funnel, reattach your control valves, you're good to go.

Also get a Reverse Osmosis system, those are the bomb.

Re: Water Collection, Purification, Filtering, Storage and Use.
I like the Aqua Cera Cerametix ceramic gravity filter-- it fits on a Berkey stainless container, and it also filters out most fluoride, unlike Berkey black filters. Its also easy to drill a hole on any 5 gallon bucket and lid to make your own water filter container. (use two 5 gallon buckets with a lid.)
[link to stpaulmercantile.com]

The Aquacera cerametix (It has tiny ceramic pores --.5 micron , which will handle most larger bacteria and parasites, but not viruses, the smallest of which are about .025 of a micron or 25 nanometers in size) with carbon on the inside. I am assuming that it also has bone char carbon on the inside--- the only type of carbon that absorbs fluoride is bone char!!

The Cerametix is a great choice for filtering out chemicals including fluoride, drugs, most bacteria and parasites.

Do not purchase the white Berkey fluoride filter add on--- it ADDS aluminum to your water while absorbing fluoride-- a poor bargain, which of course Berkey does not tell you. Black berkey filters are also cheap carbon extrusions and are not self sterilizing-- so you can end up with coliform in your filtered Berkey water when your tap water has none!!. Although I tested Berkey's ability to filter out chlorine (with my pool test kit) and it got rid of all the chlorine. You can also get rid of chlorine by simply letting your water sit out in a wide pan for 24 hours (it evaporates).

Aquacera Cerametix is impregnated with silver--- so no coliform buildup inside the filter-- so I think its a better choice. The Cerametix probably also filters out more bacteria than black Berkey because the ceramic pore size is a very small .5 micron.

I also have acidic water, so I add a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to the upper chamber with 4 gallons, and I let the water filter through. The filtered water has a pH of 8-- which is better for health.

I do not recommend Berkey--- the company has low integrity. They capitalized on the British Berkfeld name by adding in a cheaper filter than the original Doulton ceramic filter-- a 150 year old proven technology. They also did not refund customers for a lengthy shoddy production run of their black filters--- which caused the filters to break at the base.
