(OP) User ID: 163945 Norway 11/29/2006 10:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Elder Berry and Flower Profile Also known as- Sambucus spp (Nigra for berries and Canadensis for flowers) American Elder, Common Elder, Black Elder, Bour Tree, and European Black Elder. Introduction Native Americans used the flowers, berries, and bark of elderberry trees to treat fevers and joint pain for hundreds of years, but elderberryÍs real claim to fame is as a cure for the flu. Israeli researchers have developed five formulas based on elderberry fruit that have been clinically proven to prevent and ameliorate all kinds of influenza. Constituents Potassium nitrate, sambucin, sambunigrin, sugars. The complex sugars of the leaf are the immune-active fraction. Parts Used Most commonly the flowers or berries. Dried fruits are less bitter than fresh. The stems and leaves are poisonous. Typical Preparations Teas, tinctures, encapsulations, syrups, wine, cordials, and even ketchup, often combined with propolis or echinacea. Summary Extensive research show that elder stop the production of hormone-like cytokines that direct a class of white blood cells known as neutrophils to cause inflammation, especially in influenza and arthritis. On the other hand, elder increases the production non-inflammatory infection-fighting cytokines as much as 10 fold. Elder berries are known to be effective against eight strains of influenza. This suggests that elder be superior to vaccines in preventing flu, because flu vaccines are only effective against known strains of flu, whereas the virus is continually mutating to new strains. Vaccines have another draw back: over half of people who get them report side effects. Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, of Hadassah-Hebrew University in Israel found that elderberry disarms the enzyme viruses use to penetrate healthy cells in the lining of the nose and throat. Taken before infection, it prevents infection. Taken after infection, it prevents spread of the virus through the respiratory tract. In a clinical trial, 20% of study subjects reported significant improvement within 24 hours, 70% by 48 hours, and 90% claimed complete cure in three days. In contrast, subjects receiving the placebo required 6 days to recover. Precautions None for flowers or berries. When using berries it must be from the nigra species as others are known to be poisonous. [link to www.mountainroseherbs.com] |

I wish I had made up some elderberry syrup, I thought of making some and freezing it in plastic containers. You can get dried elderberries at San Francisco Herb Co. [link to www.sfherb.com] I did make up the vinegar stuff and it's great. I really like it, whew it wakes you up! Picked up some kind of bug last weekend at work and it's going into my lungs, so I got out all these herbs I have and going to experiment a little. Bronchitis has always been my weak point. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 149882I posted a link to my favorite source above, San Francisco Herb Co. [link to www.sfherb.com] they also have a great price on oregano essential oil. I have ordered from them a lot and they have really good service, prices, and quality. Another source is Monterey Bay Spice Co which I ordered from before as well, I don't like them as much as San Francisco Herb Co but they sell a lot of herbs and spices in quarter pound quantities which is kind of an advantage sometimes when you don't need a whole pound. I would still rather get stuff from San Francisco Herb Co though. But Monterey Bay has elderberries too: [link to www.herbco.com] You can get the already made elderberry syrup from VitaCost [link to www.vitacost.com] I order from them all the time. |

I think we are extremely lucky to live at a time when there is so much good information available to us. With the internet, you can find out all about how to use every kind of herb and natural medicine. And you can find sources to get everything at the best prices. It is good to have a few things around in case of some kind of outbreak. I have an 8 oz bottle of powdered vitamin C as a back up to the regular Ester C tablets I take. Might as well stock up on things like organic vinegar, bottled lemon juice, honey, herbs and spices. A lot of herbs and spices are imported and I can't see the price going down in the future, can you? And go to the used bookstore and find some good books like Prescription for Nutritional Healing, etc. Might as well figure out some good ways to take care of yourself, even if you do go to the doctor, there is only so much they can do. After that it's up to you to stay healthy. |

(OP) User ID: 231424 United States 12/07/2008 12:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's cool someone bumped this old thread. I recently made a giant batch of that vinegar tonic. That stuff is scary to make. The first time I made it I chopped and grated everything by hand. You could just about go blind from the fumes, and then you are wielding a big sharp knife while your eyes are practically swelled shut from the horseradish, hot pepper and onion fumes. Kind of not a good combination, so twice now since then I used the juicer to process the ingredients. Then I added the pulp and juice to the vinegar in big glass gallon jars and aged for 2 to 4 weeks, strained through cheese cloth and bottled back into the vinegar bottles. it is better when it has aged in the bottles, when it is new and kind of raw it turns your guts inside out, but it gets easier to handle the more it ages. Even using the juicer to process, you have to open all the windows and run a fan, it is wicked, don't wear contact lenses, I wear disposable gloves, your hands will pick up the oils and later you'll touch your eye and wish you hadn't, if you don't wear gloves. I sure like that vinegar tonic, I put about a tablespoon in a glass, add a little baking soda and let it fizz, then add some water and drink that down. It is powerful stuff. you could take it preventatively this time of year, that's what I've been doing. "Why wait til you get sick?" that's one of my mottoes. I never did too much with that elderberry syrup, I made some and have it but don't know if it's any good any more. It seems wimpier than the scary macho vinegar tonic. Oh and in that elderberry recipe I left out an important step, you have to strain it after you cook it. It will be full of seeds otherwise :-) |

Quoting: rachel 529732I wish I knew more about elderberry, I don't know what heating does to the active components. That vinegar stuff is wicked, that's why maybe it is better to take it regularly for prevention, just a little, add the baking soda and water to take the edge off it, you do get used to it after a while. It does have the ginger in it so maybe that helps too. And I suppose it would be quite good with honey. Most likely you would tolerate it better when you are sick if you had been taking a little all along. I sure like ginger tea with honey and lemon when I'm not feeling well, that is my favorite, it is so good. |

You can reuse the berries a time or two, adding in more vodka and allowing to sit 3 more months , then draining again. Take at first sign of cold or flu... will reduce the bout of illness to three days instead of 6....might work for bird flu as well... causes antibody superstorm/antiviral |
