Now that I am getting older, my tastes are changing. Bluegrass (some) can be very technically complex. That's the stuff I like. Ever listened to the soundtrack of "O, brother where art thou?" Great stuff, feel good music, foot stomping music... |

Thanks for that list. I just ordered two by Sam Bush. Amazing stuff.... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17960If you like Bush, give Nickel Creek a shot. Thile is an excellent Mandolin player. Skaggs is good too, but not really my cup of tea. Might wanna try Newgrass Revival also. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5804 United States 11/30/2006 12:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ricky Skaggs is probably the top award winner in bluegrass. He's won at least 10 Grammys and God knows how many others. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 160125True - he's excellent. Perfect. Awesome. ...Just not my personal cup of tea. I don't really go for the "Nashville" sound - I tend to prefer the more Americana-roots flavors. But hey, it's all subjective anyway. Listen to what you like! If you're a big Ricky Skaggs fan - cheers on ya mate - I'll listen along with you as we pass the bowl around ;^) |

What complexity. I will check out Nickel Creek too, since you must know what you are talking about. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17960For those of you criticizing bluegrass, you might want to listen first. Give Nickel Creek a listen for sure - you might enjoy them especially given your reaction to Bush. And thank you for the compliment but really I don't know what I'm talking about as much as I just listen to a lot of music and I know what I like. Bluegrass happens to be a favorite genre of mine, but I love old Delta Blues almost equally. Just about all the other genres run a close second - lol! I'm a music freak. |

They called themselves "Old and in the way". They only did 3 or 4 albums but had a pretty cool sound to them. (Most is recorded live) Garcia actually played banjo in the band with the legendary Vassar Clements on fiddle. You might give them a listen if you can find it. |

Yeah - I've heard their music, it's refreshing and interesting. It's also an excellent segue (a pun somewhere I suppose) for those that want to expand their musical horizons and branch out into other types of music. "Hey Jerry Garcia was into it so it must be cool" type of thing. As for Lomax, he rang a bell but I had to google him. Am I wrong or was he more of a collector/reflector of styles than a performer? |

They were stretching the meaning of 'bluegrass' for me. In searching through the Amazon files, found The Dillards. Honestly, I believe these guys must have been strung out on meth or something when they recorded this album. Check out tracks 1 - 4 - 5 and 11. Makes you wonder about these 'hillbillies' [link to www.amazon.com] |

I've not heard The Dillards - or if I have I don't remember them. I'll have to check them out tonight when I get home. Thanks! |

cossack47 User ID: 160120 United Kingdom 11/30/2006 03:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi guys , I`m a Brit that`s thinking of taking up banjo. The chap in the music shop told me I can even buy one that`s tuned like a guitar with six strings [I`m already a guitar vet]. What do you think? - should I learn from scratch to play a traditional banjo or go for an "easy option?" Have any of you ever played a six stringed , guitar tuned banjo? Is the sound like a traditionally tuned one? |
