Had to put down my Bubba-cat today
Adopted him 4.5 years ago from the shelter at 8 years old. His name was Aspen, but I called him Bubba-cat half the time. We've been through diabetes and insulin shots 2 years ago but he went in to full remission.

Just this February I took him to the vets as he was losing weight. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He took the meds in pill pockets great for the first 2 months, the last three weeks just refusing (no matter what we tried to hide them in).

I'd taken today off (thankfully). Woke up at 7:30 am to see him breathing hard and heavy, had him to the vets by 8:30 and was home by 9:30 without him. It all happened so fast, even though we knew it was eventual.

My Mr. Wonderful is away in NY on a trip with his brother so had to do this on my own. I actually am OK with being alone right now. Numb as hell though.

Aspen, Christmas 2012 with his crinkle toy presents.

Rest easy, bubba-cat.

Our fur-babies' trust us to always do what is best for them, and that includes not letting them suffer - so sorry for your loss but you will meet up again -

The Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together

Thank you. I'm familiar with the above with the loss of many pets over the years. Since both our parents are gone and some of them were animal lovers we (or Mr. Wonderful says to me) "Mom is on the other side ready to catch him (or her) when he lands."

5 hours later and I'm still numb...

I'm so sorry. It's hard losing a beloved cat.

My kitty is 16 1/2, considered geriatric in the cat community, and losing weight. He's bony when I pet him. I've decided to not bring him in because of his age.

When the time comes I'll just let him go naturally.

Whenever I can't find him immediately I suspect the worst and go looking for him in his fave oddball places, half expecting to find him dead.

I know what you're going through, OP. My girlfriend and I had to have our cat put down a few months back. She was 20 years old and couldn't keep any food down.

Going to the vet was one of the most emotional things I've ever been through. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

RIP Bubba-cat.

Thank you for providing a loving home for Bubba cat. It's obvious from the video that he was well cared for and very happy. Love is what matters.

Sorry to hear OP... I had to do the same thing with my cat several months ago for the same reason. Hey had congestive heart failure then had a blood clot. Apparently heart issues are becoming an epidemic with cats and they don't know why. The vet said recently a lot of cats have started being diagnosed with this disease. I wonder if it has something to do with Fukushima contaminated food since most cat food has some form of seafood in it.

Same here (when you can't find them). Aspen was 13 years old, which I consider not young but certainly not geriatric since indoor only cats can live to be 20 years old. I would have preferred Aspen go at home, but didn't want him to suffer. He was essentially drowning in the fluids building up in his lungs from his heart not functioning correctly. They said they could 'stabilize' but what good would that do to bring him home stabilized yet not willing to continue on his meds. It was just his time. Sadly.

Sorry for your loss as well. 20 years old is a pretty good run. After my Mom died in 1997 we inherited her cat Muffin. Had her for 5 more years. She died at the ripe old age of 18 or 19. Kidney failure. It's always rough.

(((hugs)))

Thank you. The vet assistant who's seen us with Aspen through the diabetics and the heart failure over these last 2 years kept saying the same thing - how great a home and care we gave him. Still, you can't help but wonder if you'd done something different. There was just no getting pills down this guy the last 3 weeks. We tried EVERYTHING. Nope! Not doing it Mom! lol

Thank you for providing a loving home for Bubba cat. It's obvious from the video that he was well cared for and very happy. Love is what matters.

Thank you for the condolences. We have two other cats we've had longer than Aspen, but this guy just stole my heart and was a total 'cuddle bunny' lover. My bed is going to feel mighty empty until I pass through this grief cycle.

Thank you for commiserating. And I'm sorry for your loss. I was just speaking with Mr. Wonderful a few weeks ago how when we were growing up and had pets how rare or non-existent it was to have a major health problem with them. Never heard of a cat having diabetes back in the day, never heard of cat heart failure. Has to be rooted in diet to some degree, while I do realize the genetic aspect.

I will. I ran across that video of him about a month back. Had completely forgotten about it. "So take the photographs and still frames in your mind..."
