I think the catalyst was already introduced in the form of hybrid religious characters... unfortunately they weren't all on the same page when teaching the masses and the curriculum was not followed. Since the story was told differently depending on the region, violence followed we have turned into a primarily left-brained species.

Oh well, we'll have another chance after the dark star passes... or if you can find the ancient tunnel systems you may not have to restart at all.
