PGFD Firefighter John Ulmschneider was killed responding to a call and PGFD Firefighter Kevin Swain is in critical condition.

A Prince George’s County career firefighter has been killed and a volunteer firefighter critically wounded during a response Friday evening to check on the welfare of a man at a Temple Hills home. The career firefighter/paramedic has been identified as John Ulmschneider. Firefighter/Paramedic Ulmschneider was 39 years old, and a 13 year veteran of the department.

The volunteer firefighter, Kevin Swain, was on the engine company. He is a member of Morningside VFD, Station 827. Firefighter Swain underwent surgery at the Maryland shock-trauma center in Baltimore. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Swain is listed as a live-in firefighter at the Morningside station.

Two firefighters were shot Friday night in Temple Hills, Maryland, and one is in critical condition, fire officials say.

Firefighters were responding to a call for a welfare check and shots were fired when they approached a house in the 5000 block of Sharon Road, Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesperson Mark Brady told News4.

The shooting took place about 8 p.m., Brady said.

One firefighter in “extremely critical condition” was flown to Southern Maryland Hospital Center and another with serious injuries was flown to Shock Trauma University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Another person was also shot and taken to the hospital, Brady said.
