Belgium to give iodine pills to all 11 million citizens as precaution against nuclear accidents...okay, is something up?
'All Belgians to get iodine pills' in case of nuclear accident

Brussels (AFP) - Belgium is to provide iodine pills to its entire population of around 11 million people to protect against radioactivity in case of a nuclear accident, the health minister was quoted as saying Thursday.

The move comes as Belgium faces growing pressure from neighbouring Germany to shutter two ageing nuclear power plants near their border due to concerns over their safety.

Belgium is basically a third world country. Incapable of safely operating and maintaining a nuclear power plant. That's what's up.

I can just imagine the reaction of the citizens when they're handed those pills. I'd love to see the translation of any literature given with the tablets.

Yep, and this is their best defense?!?

Maybe they should consider getting down from the top of the liberal mountain and stopping the flood of terrorists.

I mean, why treat the symptom instead of the cause?

The head of Belgium’s French-speaking Green party, Jean-Marc Nollet, backed the measures but added that “just because everyone will get these pills doesn’t mean there is no longer any nuclear risk,” La Libre reported.

Belgium’s creaking nuclear plants have been causing safety concerns for some time after a series of problems ranging from leaks to cracks and an unsolved sabotage incident.

Last week Germany asked that the 40-year-old Tihange 2 and Doel 3 reactors be turned off “until the resolution of outstanding security issues”.

When they actually DO need them, millions will die because they sold their tablets on EBAY, years ago.

What a funny coincidence, I just bought mine a couple months ago. Good luck trying to find any in the pharmacy when the boom has already happened and people are panicking in the streets. .

Uh oh

damned

Iodine pills last a good while, but they do have expiration dates. Distributing a perishable item you only need in case of emergency certainly suggest they believe a significant event may happen soon.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

Re: Belgium to give iodine pills to all 11 million citizens as precaution against nuclear accidents...okay, is something up?
This is no biggie. It has been the law here for ages that pharmacies must have the appropriate quotas of iodine pills on hand for the population, not ony close to nuclear power plants. According to my pharmacist (in Brussels), they get annual government checks to see if they have the correct amount in stock for their catchment area. When the pills expire, they must renew their stock. I saw the article in the paper today, but I don't really see what's new about this. Unless they now want to distribute the pills to individual households as a precaution, which I don't think is the case. It always seemed counterintuitive to me that in the case of a nuclear disaster you would have to go and stand in line at your local pharmacist's to get the pills to protect you against the radiation you're standing in, lol...

If anyone is actually concerned get some pharm grade iodine crystals. I have enough in a jar to make thousands of doses in liquid form.

Nice of them to do that.

After Fukushima the US government sucked up all those pills from stores so we couldn't buy them over the counter anymore.

Never did find out where they all went... bunkers prolly.

It's prep for a dirty bomb. They know there is one, but they can't locate it. The iodine pills are Plan B.

Could happen soon.

Everybody should have Lugol's 5% on hand. Take three to six drops daily in water. Increase by 5X in case of an accident/incident.

We get the pills as well.

Every ten years the Swiss government distributes potassium iodide tablets to people living near nuclear plants

Only visited Belgium once, didn't like the place at all..! not a good vibe there, compared to France & Holland. I was stopped by armed cops outside the railway station, cos they mistook me for an Irish terra ist. Checked via interpol.. ha! but they let me go, gave my UK passport back to me. Must've been the very long hair I had at the time, just got back from Berlin Wall concert in july '90. Silly Belgians! I swore I'd never go back to Belgium ever again after that.
