What Could Go Wrong?! ~ A Man-Made Meteor Shower Might Open the 2020 Olympics
A Man-Made Meteor Shower Might Open the 2020 Olympics — Here's How They'll Build It

The opening ceremony for the 2020 Olympics may feature something we've never seen before.

Japanese company ALE has designed a way to trigger an artificial meteor shower, and now it's bidding to open the next Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The man-made meteor shower will feature 500 to 1,000 "source particles" that will each serve as a mock meteor. The company will launch a satellite into space that's designed to drop the particles once it reaches a certain altitude. Each particle is just a few millimeters across, but once they hit the atmosphere, they'll burn up through a process called plasma emission and put on a spectacular light show.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, on-demand meteor showers won’t come cheap. The pellets that Star-ALE has developed for its space-borne fireworks cost about $8,100 each, making the company’s proposed 1,000-firework-strong Olympic display cost about $8.1 million—and that’s not even counting how much it would cost to launch the satellites into orbit to begin with, Derla reports.

I think this sounds really cool and all, but you wouldn't catch me sitting duck at the 2020 Olympics.

The company plans to accomplish this expensive, but jaw-dropping, feat by sending a small satellite into orbit carrying a payload of specially designed pellets.

These pellets will be ejected down into the Earth's atmosphere at a specific time and will simulate actual meteors, eventually burning up and producing a bright light visible to spectators on the ground.

A Japanese company called ALE Co is bidding to handle the pyrotechnics at the opening ceremony, and the key to its pitch is that it isn’t just planning on using fireworks like everyone else, it wants to fill the sky with hundreds of colorful shooting stars. If it gets the nod, this display would be visible from far outside Tokyo, up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. A meteor of such high apparent brightness would be potentially dangerous, but the company says that’s not a concern with its chemical payload.

ALE Co has never actually tested the source particles in real world conditions, just in the lab. However, it claims the details would be easy to work out in time for the event. It hopes to have a prototype ready for launch in 2018 to prove it can deliver on the big day.

Thanks for the pin hf

You couldn't pay me to be near there during the 2020 Olympics. And I love sky stuff. Man-made fireballs raining down on me (that will likely never be tested outside of a lab due to cost) no thanks.

Okay, there might be one reality test run...

Star-ALE has also planned to conduct a trial in 2018. If it tastes success, there are possibilities that 2020 Olympics guests will see manmade meteor showers.

You don't understand the physics then. Even if the whole satellite came down in one piece, only a small portion of it might remain in tact and hit the ground. Many larger fireballs simply disintegrate in the atmosphere well before they hit the ground.

This wouldn't worry me in the least.

When i read what they planned on i was astonished. Honestly i think its a bad thing all around.

The world is going to hell in a hand basket and people are only worried about what they can see in front of them.

Things are changing very quickly and to be honest it scares the shit out of me.

But I also just found this. Which wouldn't match up with the above quote from Star-ALE founder and CEO.

I think this is a play only to show people that we have control. When really we are only waiting for something.

When people believe that they are in control is exactly when things are shown to us.

Most people don't see it for what is it is but acts of god don't come expectedly.

I dont know if im right by saying this but i think people need to realize there is more to life, then just being able to to do whatever they want to do.
