Military Training Causes Panic in Small Town
Saturday night, May 28 a small town in southern West Virginia was "invaded" by the National Guard. At 11:00 pm national guard troops, with live ammunition, tanks, helicopters, and other military weapons conducted military Ridge Runner exercises in the town of Chapmanville, West Virginia causing panic among the citizens. No advance notice was given and the local mayor, town council and police department did not have any prior notice of the exercises. I saw and heard the helicopters about 11:15 pm. It was really scary!

This morning the Logan County Sheriff posted the following on Facebook:

PRESS RELEASE:

*NATIONAL GUARD TRAINING IN LOGAN, WV*

The WV National Guard has advised the Logan County Sheriff's Office the follow:
"Ridge Runner is a military training exercise that provides a venue for the West Virginia National Guard (WVNG) to train with other National Guard and Reserves as well as their active duty counterparts in Irregular Warfare. These exercises take place in urban and rural locations throughout the state. Ridge Runner exercises focus on Key Leader Engagements (meetings) but also include normal military maneuvers. Ridge Runner participants may be in military uniform, civilian attire, or a combination of both. All Ridge Runner participants will carry a Ridge Runner identification badge in addition to his or her military I.D. The current exercise is being conducted in the vicinity of the new Logan County National Guard Armory, Holden, WV. It will also use the recently created airstrip known as Camp Branch. Camp Branch provides a training opportunity for the Army and Air Guard aviation in the area. Camp Branch will also provide maneuver space for the Army Armored Cavalry to train. The support from the citizens of Logan County and all of the rest of the West Virginians is greatly appreciated and essential to the realism of Ridge Runner exercises. Through this partnership some economic gains could result for the region."
The National Guard will be in and out of the Logan County area through next week doing their "Ridge Runner" training.
The National Guard has advised Sheriff Sonya M. Dingess Porter this morning that the Logan County Sheriff's Office will be noticed in advance when the next training exercise will be occurring so the public can be made aware.

Is this the prelude to military law coming to all of our towns? Why did this happen over the Memorial Day weekend, without notice? Why this small town? Perhaps because it is the hometown of the current governor of the state and they know something is coming down.

Someone could have been killed. This is a small town, with local citizens with guns. The military was in danger. Who thought this was a good idea? This is the craziest thing that has ever happened in this area.

Thanks for the pin. This could happen anywhere, not just West Virginia.Tank

According to a video by local people on Facebook these exercises will continue for the next few weeks.

Practice for what's to come. The military and police WILL turn against the American people if they are told there's a threat. Like after the Boston bombing or hurricane Katrina.

Military notified the Sheriff. They did what they were supposed to do. It was (as usual) Law Enforcement who failed. By LAW, Law enforcement is REQUIRED to notify local Populations in these events.

Re: Military Training Causes Panic in Small Town
Military just apologized for the confusion and stated they will make "better" efforts in communication. Special forces are in the area conducting European tactics. The military was quick to say it had nothing to do with Marshall Law training. They also stated the state police and sheriff were notified, but did not release the location, time or dates of the training. The Military said they would contact all pertinent public officials in local areas as well if any future training is enacted. They apologized for the confusion and say they will make better efforts in communication.

This statement about "confusion" only elevates my stress levels and it does not make me very comfortable. Should expect such things in this new reality.

I wonder if any of those hicks would take a potshot at us for landing and doing a mock commando raid in their neighborhood?

They conduct military exercises all the time here--with plenty of notice. I think you missed the part about the military not notifying the local government and using live ammo. If they had tried this stunt in a town where the militia and sheriff's dept. were ready for some stupid military commander to pull a stunt like this the story would have read "Dozens of soldiers, militiamen, and local sheriff's officers engage in firefight."

Wow! Jumpy or what? Communication breakdowns happen. It's not uncommon for soldiers to have to work holiday weekends. In this socio-political climate it makes sense to have some troops booted up. Y'all can go back to grilling "it" wont happen this weekend.

My instinct is that notice wasn't given on purpose. Maybe to gauge the reaction by the citizens? I actually think that's at least part of it. It's going to happen sooner or later and they will have to know what to expect.

With advance notice they don't know about of these drills, people could plan on baking cookies for the soldiers and singing Kumbaya. And then when they really show up, firebomb em.
