Playlist of all songs uploaded by now: [link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

This is a recording of a concert that was held on the Red Square a year ago. I do believe that this particular concert may be among the best quick sneak peeks into Russian history and culture for those who may be interested a bit, but grows bored from long explanations.
Not to mention that the music is greet.

But it's quite useless, unless you understand what's being said, since the concert itself and the song used in it are plot-driven.

I've been making a of it translation song by song on my spare time for almost a year now. Now I'm planning to upload and post it same way - a song (or verses or other type of episode, since the concert has many different types of compositions in it).

Though, I will be asking for some minor help:
while I've been able to find proper translations for some of that songs, most of them doesn't have on. So, I've been forced to interpret them myself.
Though I'm usually quite confident that I'm able to translate into English and not be misunderstood, songs and verses (as well as lengthy texts) make me insecure about my skill.

So, I'll be posting a translation of the next song each time when I was the one translating it and waiting for some native speaker to proofread it before encoding and posting actual video. And here are all the lyrics and texts with possibility to suggest corrections: [link to klou.tt]

Next item is a fragment of poem by S. Gorodetskiy accompanied by dance.

Expanse of the clearing is boundless.
Flutters, blows a ruddy haystack...
And cries of old-wild
Rage of the solar face...
To the circle dances, to circle dances,
Oh, gather, you peoples,
Stars, animals, mountains, waters!
Let's surge the voice of circle dance
And spray the barren sky
With the color of people's joy!
We'll stir up the ancient chaos
We'll depose the shackled cosmos -
After all, we can, can, can!
Desires are only stronger!
Glee is only brighter -
We'll disenchant the universe!

(for those wondering, it represents Pagan past from before Rus' accepted Christianity)

Please delete this if you don't like it here, Tamonten, but it's about Russian culture. (I think) It's several years old now. Russian culture has always been (arguably) far higher than American culture, even during Soviet times.

Well, Vitas is among the stars singing on this concert too - not with one of his songs though. :)
As for the cultures - Russian one is several times older and far more solid. And meanwhile American has it's own worth, it's just a completely different kind.

I'll ask again - does this translation sound right? Because I'm not sure it's even comprehendable: for example, for the word "khorovod" I was forced to use "circle dance" as a translation, but I'm not sure if it'll be understood at all.

I know that there are poetry people here on GLP, but you might have to change the title to attract them to this thread. The xlation seems reasonable to me, except for the last line. I assume the circle dances refer to the pagan celebration.

I'll think about changing a title than.

Well, since the last line is unreasonable even in Russian (meaning something like "we'll make the spell on the universe undone"), I'll encode this next part as soon as I'll get to my computer today.

I'm not even trying to do proper poetic translation. The meaning is far more important thing IMO.

The next piece is the old folk song. Honestly speaking, at some places tenses are not completely clear in Russian, but I believe I've got it right mostly.
The song is sang in half-lines, I've separated them with | here.

In the green garden | little bird sang
This bird has a nest, | she has children
But orphan me | has no one in the world
At night I was stilling children, | milked cows at day
After milking cows, | I went into circle dance
I was in the circle dance, | I was happily playing
I look good and nice, | but poorly dressed
No one marries | me because of that
In my woe I'll go to monastery | to pray to God
Before the icon of the saints | I'll immerse in tears
Will the Lord grant me, | will I be happy?
Will I be married | to a handsome young man?
In the green garden | little bird sang
This bird has a nest, | she has children

I found this translation in a comment to another video of this song:

Little Bird

A little bird was singing in a green garden
This bird has its nest, has children
This bird has its nest, has children
But I, an orphan, have nobody in the world

But I, an orphan, have nobody in the world
In the night I dandle children, in the day I milk cows
In the night I dandled children, in the day I milked cows
After milking of cows I danced round-dance

Among round dancers I was a cherry girl (flaneur)
I was good girl, very good but had cheep clothes
I was good girl, very good but had cheep clothes
Nobody wanted merry me because of it

Nobody wanted merry me because of it
Because of the sadness I'll go to a monastery, will pray the God
Because of the sadness I'll go to a monastery, will pray the God
I'll burst into tears near to holy icons

I'll burst into tears near to holy icons
Will the God present me, will make me happy?
Will the God present me, will make me happy?
Will a handsome young guy marry me?

This translation has a number of clear problems though. Not to mention, it's rhythmically wrong, so I can't use it.
Thanks though.

You didn't like a joke I see...

any how...it is almost futile for pure translation from Slavic to modern English.... maybe English of times William Shakespeare..... but nobody needs that much of vocabulary.
For example ...how do you translate word " HOROVOD"...yes simple it can be circle dance....if only it was that simple.

In Slavic language horror represents so many social thing like..... friendship, trust, peace, love.....and only then it takes form of people join in almost ritualistic representation of open group participation of slow and dreamy song/dance.....around fire....around holly tree.....birthday person...newlyweds.......how can you translate this in English ?

I don't like crude jokes in general.

Yeah, translating such things are tricky. But if no one tries nothing will be done at all.
Not to mention that because this concert goes through history, there are only three songs with ancient theme or language, for one of which I was able to find proper translation.

BTW, the original poem was actually not about Slavs, but about Greek Pagans. Some parts were omitted to make it fit into the context.
The original started as:

Expanse of the clearing is boundless.
Flutters, blows a ruddy haystack,
Blessed by Dionysus.

"But we are still alive." - Thread: "The Great Game" by Mikhail Leontyev (2007-2008)

I have nothing against Trump, really. Please, don't give me a reason to be annoyed with his supporters. That's the second such blatant derailing in this thread, the first was deleted by me already.

Re: From Rus' to Russia - grand concert on the Red Square, June 12th 2015 - please help with translation!
Next part is a small narrative, introducing a next period of history:

Thousand years ago
Rus' appeared
with her Kiev
- a rival of Constantinople -
on the world stage.
Thousand years ago
we attained
both high art
and high crafts -
the areas in which
there was no lag for the Eastern Slav culture.
Churches built in the 11th century
are still the architectural centers
of the old cities of Eastern Slavs:
St. Sophia's Cathedral in Kiev,
St. Sophia's Cathedral in Novgorod,
Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernigov.
No later churches and buildings
did overshadow those
built in the 11th century.

Is it comprehensible in such way? I want to preserver original phrasing as much as possible.
After this narrative there is a song for which I was able to find a proper translation, so it'll be a double release next time.
