Mountain climbers mystified by blood curdling scream | |

When I winter climb I like to listen. I listen hard. There are so many useful cues that the ear can pick up on. Cues that tell you what's going right and what's going wrong. There are sounds that comfort the winter climber, like the rising tone of a piton being seated into a welcoming crack. There's that thud an ice axe makes as it vibrates in really good, sticky ice. The clip as a karabiner snaps shut, holding the rope that will stop you if you fall. Then there are the sounds that warn us. The whoomf of windslab on a slope that's primed to avalanche. Or the skittering of crampons on bare rock in a desperate search for ice. And then there are the sounds you definitely don't want to hear. Sounds you wish you could forget. Awful sound In recent weeks, we've seen some of the best ice climbing conditions in years in the west of Scotland, especially on Ben Nevis. [link to www.bbc.co.uk] |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1736134 United Kingdom 07/12/2016 12:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Published on Oct 25, 2012It was just a year ago when I was out hiking one late afternoon. I used to love to hike up and down the Natchez Trace just about thirty miles outside of Nashville. I hated hiking the roads or the trails so I would usually start on a trail and just jet off in some random directions. I kind of felt like a pioneer in the old country making discoveries and finding new things. Sometimes you come things that make you think about all those that were there before. Like a large flat rock on a cliff overlooking the river. You can just feel the thoughts and stress of those who came here hundreds of years ago to relax. Maybe a clearing at the top of a hill. If you look around hard enough you can sometimes find old bottles and pieces of bricks. At one time I'm sure someone came home from a hunt and couldn't wait to get in the front door of the place that used to stand here. It was on one of these hikes that I walked down a trial called Jackson Falls. It's about a quarter mile paved sidewalk that leads down to a set of waterfalls that fill a small creek. This waterfall was created about a thousand years ago when the river changed course and knocked a cliff over and washed it out. There are cliffs in every direction and there is only one way down to the falls and one way back up. This sidewalk is the only path. While working my way down the path I decided to pull out my new phone and just see how well it captured nature. There was a step-like wall off to the side of the path so I decided to film it. While I was filming I heard the water down the cliff and wanted to see how the zoom feature on my phone would do from this far up. While filming I heard what sounded like someone screaming down at the bottom of the cliff. I zoomed in but couldn't find anything. I held my breath and listened very closely when.....when the scream happened again only louder this time. The shear pain in the voice of this individual can almost be felt. Just imagine being the one making this sound and what could possibly make you scream like this. I put my phone back in my bag and walked cautiously down the path. When I got to the bottom there was no one there. I sat and listened for about an hour but I never heard another sound. I still don't know what made this sound or if it was a person at all but I'm glad that I have this video as a reference anytime I start to think it was just my imagination. Before you play this video turn off everything else in your house so it's silent. Then turn your sound up and get very close to your screen. See if you hear what I did that day and imagine what you would have done in my situation. Click play........ Category |
