2 days before the coup they confiscated all weapons held by civilians. There were attempts by the King of Greece and the (then) Royal Hellenice Air Force to thwart the coup attempt but nothing happened.

Keep in mind back then no Internet, scarcity of any telecommunication and the Armored Corps was based 10km outside Athens.

Turkish prime minister says security services were given the permission to counter the insurgency by the military.
