A-10 Warthog?
Just saw 4 A-10 Warthogs (2x2) flying NE over the Southern uplands in Scotland, I'm used to military craft flying through the valley I live next to, but I've never seen any A-10s before, been here over 15 years.

Just posting for GLP'ers thoughts on this; what is the A-10s specific role?

Re: A-10 Warthog?
Low Altitude infantry support, and tank killer. Freaking beast of a plane, the thing is a gun with a jet built around it. Basically a flying gas tank with cannon, and an armored cockpit.

LOL...I know they're old workhorses; but I've never seen them running drills in my area. I'm more used to Tornados, Typhoons, military cargo planes and helos running low flying drills.

Tank busting and close air support. Very close support. No other plane like it. Or as good

I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida and over the past year I've seen Chinooks several times. I've never seen them before in my life here and I've been here for decades.

Weird thing was I didn't even know what they were but before I saw them I had 3 dreams with helicopters similar to a Chinoook in which the sh*t hit the fan.

I have not seen you in a long time 4by2!

what i like about the A10 is that they designed the gun first, and then they decided to put it in a plane, so the plane is little more than a holster

Saw one at a show in Baltimore, and it came
over LOW, and SCREAMING,
those engines almost blew my eardrums out
of my head.

They would have come in handy in WWII.

I had a wee root about YT for some vids, and I wouldn't want one of them on my tail if I was a tank crew...

was great seeing them at such close quarters, they were real low so I got to see just about every detail of them...made my day!

I've seen them a few times, cutting their way through the valley of the hillside I live on; you never forget the noise of that double rotor, hear it from miles away.

Your first viewing must have been a 'should I bug out day' for sure...lol

Hey Malu, good to see you still kicking about...I've been keeping it low profile for a while; always been around, can't beat GLP for breaking news.

That's good to know; you've got to give them props on the design of that holster though...lol

The rectangular wing planform gives it the ability to achieve very high angles of attack at very slow speeds... great turning performance... Also the use of turbofan engines means superior fuel economy, so this pig can loiter for a long time.

In short, it was the best design possible for the job, and with the current technology... same as the Viper

It has all gone downhill after the F15, F16 and A10.

instead of spending trillions on F22 and F35.. they could have just cranked out 150,000 F15s.. no force on earth could have ever challenged it. Upgrade the current mothballed fleet at Davis AFB for autonomous operation and the sky is yours.

Russia has some fine aircraft to be sure, their helos are top shelf, but the A10, F15 and F16 are the best in their class and will be for generations... all they needed was upgrades, better avionics, conformal fuel tanks, composite structure, and eventually take the pilot out and put them in a air conditioned trailer.

I think they built it around those two engines,
a bathtub for the pilot, and the cannon.

I wouldn't want to be in a tank and hear one coming.
