Re: A-10 Warthog?
Love it. We don't have any real CAS capabilities (some JDAM/JSOW/JASSMs for our few F-18s) and would love to see these here instead of having US scrap them.

I'm also surprised that no zombie flick has ever used a Warthog. A city street packed full of zombies and A-10 makes a pass...

Re: A-10 Warthog?
Just saw 4 A-10 Warthogs (2x2) flying NE over the Southern uplands in Scotland, I'm used to military craft flying through the valley I live next to, but I've never seen any A-10s before, been here over 15 years.

Just posting for GLP'ers thoughts on this; what is the A-10s specific role?
 Quoting: 4by2

The A10 based in the UK wre at RAF Bentwaters(92 &81 TFS),RAF Woodbridge(91 & 81 TFS),RAF Alconberry(509,510 & 511 TFS), They were as common as muck in those areas back in the late 1980's.

10 years ago they were partially retired from service by the US, but more resonantly the USA have been looking to resurrect older aircraft due to lack of budget.

It was a good and well liked aircraft. In this day and age it is probably more reliant with it's low flying abilities and high Armour for deployment in troubled areas.

Tank busting and close air support. Very close support. No other plane like it. Or as good

Also known as The Devils Cross

Usually by the enemy

I had a wee root about YT for some vids, and I wouldn't want one of them on my tail if I was a tank crew...

was great seeing them at such close quarters, they were real low so I got to see just about every detail of them...made my day!

It is one helluva airframe! Pilot sits inside a titanium armor tub with that 6 barrel Vulcan under him. My cousin used to fly one back in the day. Said it was completely unlike any other plane he had flown Fair child's last government contract plane I think before they were bought up by Grumman I think.

It's a monster

Low Altitude infantry support, and tank killer. Freaking beast of a plane, the thing is a gun with a jet built around it. Basically a flying gas tank with cannon, and an armored cockpit.

Correct and the 30mm Gatling gun sounds like a big jackhammer in the sky while firing. They followed me around Germany for 2 years while playing war games.
Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!

And to think that they got the nerve to name the F35 after the A10.

Unlike most I suspect that in at least one role (penetrator) the F35 will eventually grow into a decent plane, but it is nothing like the A10. They have nothing in common.

I think they built it around those two engines,
a bathtub for the pilot, and the cannon.

I wouldn't want to be in a tank and hear one coming.

Of course its awesome, flying guns are always awesome. However as I have mentioned before, combat attrition ration for it in Europe was estimated during a war to be on the oreder of 60% loss ratio means ten go out four come back. So it's like a 57 chevy now, totally amazing but a sitting duck with modern AA and weasel shits.

Most aussies end up driving our gear and being grateful for that. Anyway its up-gradable, and also may I add, that the enemy tactic being a defeated low level enemy, is to put all his money into AA and that's a "against the ropes" position to be in, and they know it. They could never field an armor specialized killing plane like this they can only copy us and mime and mimic us, that's their state of being. See that jokey Space Shuttle they built? Come on now, throwing rocks or missiles at some high level tech in your skies is not being equal to that tech.

The air force never liked the a-10 so they made up bad numbers cause they wanted a new plane. Ask the any soldier on the ground if he likes the a-10.

When they started to use them in combat in 1991 Iraq, the plane performed above and beyond expectations.

Four A-10s were shot down during the war, all by surface-to-air missiles. Another two battle-damaged A-10s and OA-10As returned to base but were written off, some sustaining additional damage in crash landings. The A-10 had a mission capable rate of 95.7 percent, flew 8,100 sorties, and launched 90 percent of the AGM-65 Maverick missiles fired in the conflict. Shortly after the Gulf War, the Air Force abandoned the idea of replacing the A-10 with a close air support version of the F-16.

and it kept performing since then

Scotland, with its rough terrain, would be a perfect place for A 10 aviators to hone their skills. The maneuverability of that aircraft is simply amazing.
