The last poem written by Edgar Allan Poe
Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes! - that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

-Edgar Allan Poe

I have never gotten poetry without sound. Put it to music and it makes sense.

To spell this out for everyone: Every night, he literally lays with the corpse of Annabel Lee in her tomb by the sea. This is a poem about necrophilia, probably written as a joke.

Just throwing this out there, there is more to love than sex. I'd rather see my love safe and happy for the rest of her life than ever worry about sex, but perhaps the writer is lamenting this fact that she is no longer alive, that all he has left now of her is memories and a crypt.

Maybe her tomb is she is trapped somewhere. From a higher realm into a lower own.

Yeah, but he's actually getting in the tomb. I think Poe had a subtle but perverse sense of humor that's often lost on modern readers.

Re: The last poem written by Edgar Allan Poe
The poem said the soul to soul connection will never be severed, even after death, an after her physical body is in the grave.

This reminds us our soul's immortality. And the poem shows the deep love and connection, which still exists after death.

Reminding us, that we literally and never truly lose our loved ones, the bond is never severed, even after death.

some people, and dogs, have a harder time saying goodbye than others.

but i interpret it as a requiem, as a poem about loss, and those who are left behind.

perhaps he was venting a true sorrow which had plagued him for a long time, or perhaps they were metaphorical words to describe his emotional state, perhaps a lost sense of love and wonder.

Re: The last poem written by Edgar Allan Poe
He was crazy but not that crazy. He went to her tomb at night yes, as a dog does for his human friend. This was the truth of it. We studied him in school. A lot of his poems and short stories. The Raven, that is a good one. The short stories are like mini terror. He used mind games for sure. But he was a very strange man.

I read later he was a spy for the government.
