Customer Service Has Gone to Crap!
I can remember back in the 70's, when we would go to the gas station, there was a man attending the pump who would pump the gas and clean our windshield and check our oil. He would bring the credit card slider out and do the payment right there at the car. We never had to get out. Of course, he pumped our gas.

In the 70's, when you went to Sears for shoes, there were people working in the department who would measure your foot and go get the size you were looking for. They would put the shoe on your feet and you could see if you liked them. Things were done this way.

When you went to Sears for bras, the women could measure you and help fit you for a bra. There was real customer service.

Now, you can forget being helped by an actual person no matter where you go. If you go to McDonald's at 10 o'clock at night, you are going to wait 15 minutes in the drive through for a small order.

Customer service has gone to crap.

Management thinks that they are Number One.

It's so sad.

I have seen the future and the future is Stupid.

Tell me some stories of customer service from days gone by that you remember. The young people don't know any different. Let's tell them what it was like to actually have someone wait on you.

Why would people provide good service if they get paid the same for bad?

Why worry about keeping your job (or husband) if the big government will provide for you if you lose it?

I was at the Wal-Mart doing a computer based learning module the other day. They were telling me that people will buy things that are at eye level. They were also telling me the little secrets of how they merchandise things.

I think that they figured out they could short us all and we would still run all over ourselves to blow money. Maybe it's because there are so many more people now than there were back in the 70's. Maybe it's a volume of customers issue.

I look at Wal-Mart and imagine how much money they could actually make if they provided good customer service.

I have good news. Go to Nordstrom and they will fit you for a bra and anything else you want. Heh.

If you go to Macy's (not a discount store) or Sears, for example, you have to find your own stuff, and then drag it over to the cashier's area for them to take your money. Said cashiers' areas are often unmanned. No wonder they are sinking.

I work in customer service. I've had two disciplinaries resulting in final warnings and numerous complaints from customers about my rudeness. Oh and I was nominated an award for best customer service at our annual awards ceremony.

Hahaha are you kidding us with that last part?

The Walton's have more money than you could ever imagine, all from fucking over the people.

Providing real customer service would actually cause them to lose money.

Besides all retailers depend on eye-level marketing and other less-than-honest tactics. Go to any cereal aisle, there's some of the biggest proof.

Well, they told me a story about Jane who made her shopping trip through the Wal-Mart in 20 minutes and her double who took 40 minutes, was late to get her kids and spent only 60 dollars instead of 80.

According to Wally, proper product placement makes all the difference.

You are being worked over for your money when you go to Wally.

They shouldn't be allowed to pipe that music in. I would check people out and they were jamming to the music and I don't even think they were completely aware of what was being done to their checking account.

People 40, 50, 60 years ago were much different then than are today. Back then as a general rule, people were courteous, especially if they worked with the public.

Children were taught manners from a very early age in those days, then grew up courteous without giving it a thought.

Some gas stations in earlier days would change your oil, then vacuum the interior and wash the windows. No extra charge. They didn't expect a tip, either, because they were paid for what they had done. Service was the name of the game and the customer always came first.

The minute you walked into a store, someone was there to greet you and help you find what you were looking for. If they didn't have what you were looking for, they told you who did.

I miss those days.

In the 70s, people could work a customer service job and earn a living wage.

Why would you take pride in your service skills when you're barely making enough money to buy gas to drive to your 2nd, 3rd and 4th jobs?

Just don't be mad at the Filipinos and Indians; they're just trying to make a living.

And realize that companies outsourcing jobs to other countries should be shamed as much as hiring undocumented immigrants. No one wants to pick fruits/veggies for $5 an hour, but I'm sure most Americans wouldn't mind making $11+ an hour taking phone calls.

EXCELLENT point, as well!

Try supporting a family on minimum wage (shit, try even $12/hour) and see how long it takes for your will to break down.

Family comes first, it's why we're all working. So if employees are expected to take pride in their position, they need to be adequately compensated for their work, time, and for the time spent away from family (which is worth more than any employer can pay, really, but that doesn't he can't at least acknowledge that).

Re: Customer Service Has Gone to Crap!
New retail models taught are all about maximizing profit through using as few hours of payroll possible.

You don't see cashiers at registers anymore because they are made to run registers while completing other store projects.

The only salaried people on staff now due to new overtime regulations are Store Managers. All others, Assistants, and Shift Managers are now hourly and not allowed OT ever. In fact most don't get 35 hours a week.

Most retail Store Managers now work 55 to 65 hours per week and turnover is rapidly growing. Most only last a few years then they get fired or burnout. Last retailer I worked for had 50% Store Manager turnover a year. I know one large pharmacy chain where Store Manager turnover is 65 to 70% a year.

Salaries in Retail Management for GM's have remained the same for 10 years now. Real wages have slipped badly. For other management positions wages have dropped even more. Bonuses which used to be 10k or 20k a year are now limited to 10% of salary and that is only if you meet impossible budget expectations.

The middle class is being systematically wiped out by Globalism and Supercorporations.

Again, we enable the system.

It's up to the employees to draw the line, say "enough is enough". Demand less or more hours (depending on the situation). Demand adequate compensation.

If ALL of us (us, as in the "work force") agree to these terms, there would be no one willing to fill the position, meaning the employer would have no choice but to comply.

I know this all sounds unrealistic, but it really is that easy.

What really gets me is none of these people working cash registers know how to properly count back your change after a purchase. They just hand you whatever the machine tells them. Back in the day if you couldn't count back change you didn't work the cash register. McDonalds got the stupid started by putting pictures on the register keys instead of #'s. All downhill from there.
BTW: by counting back the change properly I mean if your purchase is $12. 75 and you pay with a $20.00, the cashier gives you a quarter saying: "25 cents makes it $13.00 $2.00 makes it $15. 00 and $5.00 more is $20.00. Have a good day."

Yeah well, neither can I, really, but I do love their shoe department, or used to. I did have an excellent experience trying on a satin piece in the lingerie department once. So much assistance. I ended up buying it. It's not a regular thing - trust me.

My point was that it's the only place, that I know of where they will assist the customer. Oh yeah, and when my mom got really old and we went to buy her some bras. They were awesome in helping.

All stores of the non-discount variety should be that way. I detest going to a place, having to look all over what the category of item I am looking for, and there is no one to even point me in that direction. Bump THAT. Oh, and then find and beg someone to take my money. Bump THAT big time.

I prefer vintage, high end, never used items. I love looking for them, too.

They can keep their cheap-arse, Made in some country I've never heard of, crap that falls apart as soon as it's washed.

I hope all of the ones that stopped providing customer service go down. I'll remember them, too when they start selling online only, and boycott them. Pfft. I need to see and feel stuff before I buy.

I am a seasoned, experienced shopper and I know the brands and I know the deals.

They can kiss my sweet southern, you-know-what.

I remember exactly what you mean!

There was a shopping plaza we always went to, for new shoes for school, an Easter outfit, or Christmas shopping. These were the norm here in the south. We had Leggett's store, which is now Belk.

I remember always going in and there was a person who would come to you and ask if hey could help you find something. We did not have to chase down someone from another department just to try something on. The fitting rooms even had a little sofa where people could sit and help you decide if it looked good, etc.

And the shoe department! Oh my goodness. There were always helpful young (handsome) men ready and waiting to fit you and measure your foot properly. Even make a second trip to get another pair if your size wasn't right. And they did it willingly, happily. I KNOW this is where my love of shoes comes from. It is my delicious habit, when it comes to classy high heels I cannot turn them down. lol

I could go on and on. I remember the gas station too.

Why doesn't the industry realize this and put it in place again. Truly caring about customers. They would make a fortune.
