Anonymous Coward User ID: 72719711 United States 08/15/2016 12:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live there. On the plus side the natural environment is beautiful and diverse; there are mountains, desert, forest, and marine areas. The weather is good in the summer, but cold and rainy much of the time (historically). On the minus side, the cost of living is high and the job market is tough for other than low-wage jobs. Most long-term residents believe the city is getting less livable (but that's probably true in many places). Also, traffic is really bad for a city of Portland's size. Bear in mind there is a popular slogan "Keep Portland Weird" that appears on bumper stickers all over town. Some weirdness can be beneficial; but, too much is too much. Best of luck! |

I also hope you can afford to buy a house rather than rent. Finding a rental is hard, and a lot of them are shitty. If you are moving from the Bay area or NYC, things will seem cheap. Don't expect people to be less racist there. Portland is a very white city, with some asians and hispanics. A lot of the african americans live in Gresham, which is trying to gentrify, but is still high crime. If you still want to move there, visit and check out the neighborhoods you like and the rent prices. Do not move there with no ob lined up, you will be sorry. Also, a lot of the people who are from that area originally really resent the "transplants" as they are called, because of all the changes like traffic and prices. People from that area can be very passive aggressive. And I hope you love rain, darkness, spiders and damp. If you prefer sunshine, check out Bend, Oregon instead. Southern Oregon is also nice and sunny. Seattle is even more expensive than Portland, but at least there is a lot of fresh seafood. Check out the Olympic Penninsula, like Port Angeles. It's beautiful up there. Hike a rainforest trail. Last Edited by FloridaWoman on 08/15/2016 12:58 PM IDGAF |

Like other urban areas but fewer major freeways which mean you are hosed when there is a wreck or stall as you don't have many detour options. If you ride a bike or walk it may be tolerable. Lived there a couple of times in the late 80's early 90s (Westide, Eastside). I liked the city, just don't like the number of people. Strip bars may be the best in the country. Don't listen to all the old, ignorant fucks on here who tell you all about how terrible it is over here and how evil millennials are etc. They are neither millennials nor from this area (most likely) so they have no idea what they are talking about. There's a lot of dumb shit out here socially, of course, this is a very liberal area, but just stay true to yourself, enjoy the nice weather (best kept secret, Seattle doesn't rain as much as everyone wants you to believe) go play in the mountains and have a blast! The PNW is the shit, my friend! Last Edited by Das Kaiser on 08/15/2016 01:08 PM Chance favors the prepared mind.
