Not even close. 1998 was much hotter. It's been cooling ever since. The 2016/2017 El niño was no where near as strong as the 1998 event. We are now deeply into a rapidly cooling la Niña event. Temperatures are dropping the fastest ever recorded. Welcome to the new ice age.
