F-35 will cost $400 billion, and still doesn't have a working weapons system
“In fact the program is actually not on a path toward success but instead on a path toward failing to deliver” the aircraft’s full capabilities, “for which the Department is paying almost $400 billion by the scheduled end” of its development in 2018, Michael Gilmore, the Defense Department’s director of operational testing, said in an Aug. 9 memo obtained by Bloomberg News.

“Achieving full combat capability with the Joint Strike Fighter is at substantial risk” of not occurring before development is supposed to end and realistic combat testing begins, he said of the F-35."

The word "boondoggle" comes to mind...

- Slower than the F-14
- Less than half the range of the A-6
- Sustained turn performance no better than a 1960s F-4 phantom
- Can't beat an F-16 in a dogfight.

Why are we paying for this again?

It's ok, the new carrier Gerald R Ford couldn't launch one anyhow and it cost 13 billion to be a giant paperweight.

the technology is very susceptible to human error. an inadvertent muscle contraction could have unintended consequences. the systems complexity may exceed human capacity to operate at 100%. it needs to be dumbed down! not me

Were the F-14, F-15, F-16 or F-18 projects ever close to being failures. I seem to remember that at least F-14 was almost cancelled, because the only two existing prototypes crashed.

Don't worry. Our F-18 fleet is going to be retired in 2020s and the government/military is salivating over F-35. Not because of its stellar performance, but because it's an American plane.

Personally, I'd go for JAS 39E/F Gripen or Eurofighter, but I'm pretty sure they'll buy more F-35s off your hands.

Donations, don't forget the donations. If the congressmen only get 1% that's $4billion for their reelection champagnes.

And then there are all added on little personal perks.

The F-35 fails because it is trying to do several things at once. It's like trying to breed a combined race horse/guard dog/milk cow. The resulting beast will surely be ugly as sin, and it won't be very good at any of its jobs. It will probably take a lot of money to produce as well.

Same thing with the F-35.

indeed i did. pockets are always getting lined from shady deals. weapons manufacturers create conflicts to sell to all sides and the media gives them advertising.

That reminds me, how many trillions was the pentagon missing?
not the $2.3 trillion before 9-11.

$6.5 trillion this time. Crooks the lot of them.

Congress always has very poor approval ratings and the bastards keep getting reelected over and over until retiring.

Simplicity is where it's at if you want to fly. Get a Powered parachute. Cheap, easy, fun.

Those fighter jet planes are already drones.

I read war game reports before they were scraped off the net from US vs UK war games.

I am telling you now, the UK has a black budget submarine which I don't think falls into the trident category. Like I would hedge a £1,000 wager that one of the submarines we have as our disposal has been paid for "off-budget", if you will.

One UK submarine wiped out the whole of the US navy fleet without being detected. Like - the whole fleet, without being detected at all.

To add to that we have porton down (which we know about), and also, I'd imagine, other off-budget facilities. I personally believe hand on heart that if everything was going to shit the UK is more than capable of opening a jam jar and placing it into a bin in the middle of a city centre then forgetting about it.

That's it - We have the capability of releasing biological agents to wipe out specific races or genetics. Like "Gene xy00020202020 is only found in arabs with aggresive tendancies. Well xy00020202020 is getting a bit too fucking aggresive at the minute so let's open a jam jar and finish them off.

I don't know but I know a lad who seen a dispoal facility for medical and nuclear waste in the UK where they bury it. His exact words I shit you not was "they seal them with the equivilent of concrete before bury them - I seen a squirrel run towards one once before it was sealed and when it got 2 foot away it turned over and dropped dead".

There are weapons available that would blow your mind but they are kept as trump cards, literally. It's a case of trying your best to keep wars manual and not use the secrets, as if they do the world would melt.

Re: F-35 will cost $400 billion, and still doesn't have a working weapons system
will an f-16 beat it in a dogfight? likely

but the f-16 will never make it to the dog fight. it will be shot down and the pilot will never know what hit him, or that he was under threat.

its like saying a trained knife fighter will out knife fight a navy seal sniper. sure - but the knife fighter will be a cloud of pink mist long before the knife fight.
