Switzerland is also one of the last functioning democracies.

If they have a referendum it is binding. In the Netherlands is is more or less to "advise" the government. No value at all.

If the Swiss step out of Schengen, other countries will soon follow in their steps. Effectively making all the other countries self-responsible again for their own borders.

BTW the Schengen treaty is one of the corner stones of the EU. It is the basis of the internal free trade and free movement of people. If it goes, the EU as a structure will collapse.
