Oklahoma shuts down fracking water wells after quake rattles Dallas to Dakotas
Updated with better article.

An earthquake matching the largest in state history rattled Oklahoma and neighboring states Saturday morning, damaging buildings and leading Gov. Mary Fallin to issued a state of emergency for Pawnee County.

The quake prompted state oil and gas industry regulators to order the shut down of disposal wells in a more than 700-square mile area near the quake’s epicenter.

The 5.6-magnitude temblor was based about 8 to 9 miles northwest of Pawnee, striking at 7:02 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake matched the largest recorded in state history, which struck near Prague in Lincoln County in 2011.

After Saturday’s quake, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission issued orders to indefinitely shut down 37 oil and gas disposal wells in a 725-square mile area near Pawnee County, about 60 miles northwest of Tulsa.

I think anyway.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission directed dozens of wastewater disposal wells within an approximate 500-square-mile area around the quake's epicenter to shut down.

The commission says about 35 wells are included in the directive, which a commission spokesman says was prompted by scientific studies linking the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production to such earthquakes.

The number of magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes has skyrocketed in Oklahoma, from a few dozen in 2012 to more than 900 last year.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Robert Sanders described the quake as "one of the largest events in Oklahoma in the last few years," NBC5 reports. The previous record-breaker for strongest earthquake in Oklahoma's history hit on Nov. 5, 2011, the National Weather Service reports.

Some parts of Oklahoma now rival Northern California as the country's most shake-prone, NBC5 reports. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission directed dozens of wastewater disposal wells within an approximate 500-square-mile area around the quake's epicenter to shut down.

Since when has a man-made disaster ever stopped anyone? What's the count for oil spills now? Do they make a number that high? (kidding) Seriously though I can guarantee they'll be back up & running shortly.

For example. From the July 2016 article from The Oklahoman.

The Corporation Commission has evolved its response to earthquakes linked to the volume of wastewater injected into the Arbuckle formation. After focusing on localized areas around earthquake swarms, the commission earlier this year expanded its focus to large swathes of north central and central Oklahoma.

We have had numerous small earthquakes in my area of West Texas from fracking wells where we didn't used to have ANY earthquakes. People grumble but nothing will stop the oil, we literally can't as long as you put gas in your cars.
