The cottage, which can’t be seen from the street, is off to the south side of “Shawnee’s Paradise,” on the corner of Be Here Now Street and Joshua’s Way, an ode to her late son, who died inside his house in 2009 of a heart attack. The property - recently featured by the Tiny House Giant Journey travel blog - is just under a half-acre of wooded lawn stretched around a man-made pond and waterfall and hiding from its surroundings behind a hedge.

The home belongs to a land trust run by Chasser’s daughter. Chasser makes the property available to tenants who want to rent rooms, a mini-camper, or even set up tents in the front yard. It’s partly about sharing her simple life, but it helps her pay the bills too, along with proceeds from Shawnee’s Greenthumb Popcorn, which she mass-produces and sells in Whole Foods stores around Florida.

But everything changed about a year ago, when someone called 311 to complain that Chasser was running the property like an apartment complex and campground in the middle of a single-family neighborhood. Chasser, who says she’s tight with her neighbors, blames a booted tenant. But the unexpected visit from county code enforcement last September jarred her world.

I know she loves her tree house but if she really wants to continue her lifestyle in peace, she should consider moving to Hawaii. Good portion of the population on all islands choose to live like that. We've got lots of tree dwellers.

Still I want to ask you too look at this judicial matter in another way. A more creative way and a way more in tune with the spirit of the law. It is obvious that the law never anticipated that this lady would live so long, happily, and without causing trouble to anyone, in a treehouse in the middle of an urban area.

You might be able to label it an art project, a demonstration project of urban green zones or what not. Just try to be creative.

I totally understand the your civil servants do not always have the room to manoeuvre that wide.

But you, as being the mayor certainly must have that manoeuvring space. Why otherwise would people all over the planet want to have a mayor?

Besides when you solve this problem elegant and fast you prevent it from blowing up further on the internet with petitions and such. I that in that case everyone would look silly and nobody wins.

I hope you will find the time and the creativity to solve this in an elegant way.

So, she lived there for 24 of his 26 years as a county employee and he never knew the treehouse was there? So, he gets paid to do nothing...alrighty then.


The county’s issue with Chasser’s abode isn’t specifically that she lives there, Roig said, but that it’s unsafe.

Yet, it survived Hurricane Andrew while other 'county approved' buildings didn't.


“They’re creating a campground out there. You just can’t go into a residential property and start charging outsiders to come in. We’ve got neighbors who we’ve got to protect their rights also,” Roig said. “It’s just a combination of situations that haven’t been well thought out.”

Yet, the tree house is treated like a landmark and included in official marketing material from the county’s tourism bureau.

Money and power. Power and money. They force her to tear it down, charge her to rebuild, with many many paid permits and inspections of course, but only AFTER she has submitted professionally drawn up plans and requested zoning changes for county approval. At completion, the city can then charge business taxes, enforce quarterly inspections and reap higher profits from 'legally' drawn tourism.
