It came out right around the same time of the failed coup in the Soviet Union and that coincidence was duly noted when it hit the theaters since the movie dealt a lot with the tensions between Starfleet (a stand-in for the United States) and the Klingon Empire (a stand-in for the Soviets). I immediately knew this was going to be a kick ass movie the second the intense overture theme started. It was telling the audience that this will not be a popcorn flick to make you feel good like The Voyage Home (which was the 3rd best in the entire series IMO). It was telling the audience that this is a serious movie with a dark subject matter and it bears significant historical parallels with the world today....
